2xEL34 Franklin?

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

Truth be told, new EF86 are noisy as heck. I've got an old GEC NOS version but it ran me close to 65 bucks.

the newer ef86, calm the gain down and they shouldnt be too noisy. being pentodes, they have gain (voltage gain that is) to burn. or, maybe try a cascode. should quiet them right down.

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

id love to have a 15/30w switchable version. all you really have to do is half the impedance when using two tubes right?
ive never fallen in love with any ef86 circut that ive tried, could be i havent spent enough time with em but the dual triode based stuff just seems more to my liking.

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

Yep, just half the impedance. Truth be told, the matchless trannies I"m using can handle that slight impedance mismatch with ease.

It's the radical mismatch that gets you into trouble. 4 to 16 type thing.

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

Yeah, I'm not sure the EF86 is everyone's thing.

I bought a NOS Dario Miniwatt from KCA NOS.....$50.00 +/-....sounded great in the Clubman, but I'm not sure everyone wants to deal with $50.00 tubes.

As an option, it might be nice.....

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

What was it called when Franklin went to Europe and wore a racoon hat, ect? He was some kind of unofficial ambassitor or something. Something along that line might give Franklin a European flavor and kind of symbolize the EL34 thing.

Just a thought (more of a half thought:burnout: )

But if it only has two tubes to start with...

Let's get really crazy. What if it had a built-in power soak like the THD Uni-Valve? No tubes to pull, no impedence issues, no extra boxes & cables to buy & lug around...it's a beautiful thing!

I'd skip the EF86 thing...IMO they're a little too rare for a working amp unless you can buy a few hundred of 'em and have enough to build & supply good ones for the duration of the amps life. Kind of like what audio designers went through when the 6386 ceased to be available in large numbers, they built what they could and switched the designs around to accept tubes that are more common. Sure, you can still order a Manley Vari-Mu with 6386 tubes but 'yer gonna pay dearly for it.

I'll cast my vote for "Frankenstein". Though Franklin-34 is cool too...especially if it ends up being a 34-watt amp!

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

If an OT is rated at 45 watts in fixed bias mode, cathode bias will take it down to approximately _______?

34 watts potentially? The Clubman is rated at 35 watts. So if you call it a franklin 34, relating to EL34's, you imply that the amp is rated at 34 watts, even though that will not be absolute.

Confusing, this is.

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

Well, what is a JTM45 really?

30-33 watts???

The name "implies" 45.........

I still vote Franklin 15/30/45, although if I was shopping & I read the description of the "Franklin-34", I would learn that the "34" refers to EL-34s, not the output......so I don't think there is any real confusion.

I think I just confused myself:laugh2:

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

I think the JTM45 is really 45 watts. It's a 45 watt output transformer. I think the difference is fixed versus cathode bias of an AB circuit. I won't get into the entire Class A argument.

Re: 2xEL34 Franklin?

:laugh2: yeah, the Class A argument is right up there with the "SS vs. Tubes"

O.K., I thought the JTM45 was actually lower....or is it just the Bluesbreaker combo?
