3 pickup 'singlecut' designs: three versions

I thought I'd post my collection of 3 pickup singlecuts and in particular the three I build myself from top to bottom.

I took inspiration out of so many designs, it'd be a story in and by itself to explain it all but here's a go.

A while back, I wanted my own version of the wiring of Teye guitars, or what I thought to be was his wiring: 3 pickups, one 5way switch, 4 pots. I wanted two tone two volumes but 'assignable', meaning that the pots werent' fixed to the pickup. I wanted that dreaded middle pickup to be functioning in a logical, sensible, musical way. With the help of one of you guys (can't remember who it was, I'm sorry bro!) I figured it out.

So, what do we have here, from left to right (which is the order in which they were finished). Well, they're the prototypes for my own TC line of guitars, TC meaning ToneChaser (my doublecut design is called ToneMachine).

The left one was finished last year and features a maple top on 1piece limba back, 1 piece rosewood neck, ebony board. 2 SD 'vintage' p90's (shielded on the inside to prevent hum, which works remarkably well!) and a Black Winter/Fullshred hybrid. I have 1 master volume and 1 VE (voice expander, more on that later). The other 2 knobs are one BMP and one switch to select passive or active for the humbucker.

The middle one is its sibling. it was another experiment where I initially routed it for a floyd but opted out of it at the last minute and went with a Schaller 3801 which is an EPIC trem (highly recommended). The bridge pup is an Alternative8/Fullshred hybrid and neck+middle are 2 Slug90's. This one was the first to have the assignable controls and I omitted the regular tone controls for 2 VE's.

The right one was featured in a thread of itself a while ago but a short recap: it was a TelePaul. I leveled the top, I added a top after chambering and then continued to build as if it was a brand new guitar. SH6N/Screaming Demon AlnicoVIII in bridge, Phat Cat Alnico V in middle, Jazz/Seth Alnico V in neck. I figured a way to 'toast' the covers (or 'burn the chrome' which is technically incorrect) so I figured why the heck not.

The knobs are turned from leftovers of the neck blank Or cutoffs of the body.

Keep in mind, these are just prototypes! Hence the superthin finish, the not-so-flamy tops and some features you might think of as odd (like the slanted bridge on the middle one or that little hole in the left one). Also, i experimented a bit with the location of the switch and pots and finally landed on the right configuration. It requires no adjustment from you LP players but it feels a bit more naturale at the same time. The switch is in a more sensible position too.

So yeah. there you go.

Nice work! I love LP's and these bring their own attitude to the table. I think what really sets them apart is what you are doing with the wiring, very cool idea indeed.

Like the color on the left and the semi hollow on the right
But I love the red..... I wanna make babies with it

Wow! I'd like to know more about your "assignable" pots... that's an intriguing concept!

I've always thought that a bridge humbucker paired up with P-90's for an HSS would be great... I'd like that setup on the semi-hollow, personally. Also love your finishes... particularly the gray.

Great work!

Re: 3 pickup 'singlecut' designs: three versions

The idea behind 'my wiring' is fairly simple and rests on 3 juxtapositions.

1: I wanted the standard controls of a les Paul. No push pull pots (fragile) or stereo pots (not the sweep or torque I want; too limiting).

2: I wanted easy off the shelf parts.

3: the normal wiring of a les Paul is sweet. Allows for so much. But (here comes #4...)

4: no quack. I discovered early in that quack is a combination of 2 single coils (at least one true single), preferably AlnicoV (to me anyway) and a trem. P90's often don't cut it and need some work but you could manage it.

Those 4 wishes, demands, pushed me towards this

I have this now.

Position 1: bridge, lower controls
Position 2: bridge lower controls, middle upper controls
Position 3: bridge lower controls, neck upper controls
Position 4: mid lower controls, neck upper controls
Position 5: neck upper controls

That's what I have.

The way I wired it is a bit difficult to explain but I will draw a schematic if I'm up to it. It is enough to say that the pots are completely standard and I'm using a normal mono jack plus a 5way 4pole switch. (On poles 1&2 I select the pickups; that signal goes to the volume pot, then back to the 5way, to a new 'fresh' pole, corresponding positions and I combine both signals out of pole 3&4 to the jack).
Hope that helps.

Re: 3 pickup 'singlecut' designs: three versions

I love p90's but the slug90 is cool too. Like a gnarly, *****y tele.

The phat cat AlnicoV Is almost like that. Almost.

With 2 'vintage' p90's you really need the VoiceExpander to get it chimey and quacky though.

Nice job. Enjoy them well. :cool2:

Re: 3 pickup 'singlecut' designs: three versions

Cool, very interesting pu combos.

At first I thought the middle one had the fine-tunerless Floyd that's been brought back recently.

Loving that Hollowbody on the left. I've been thinking of doing a finish like that on a future build. Liking the wiring schemes, too.
