Re: 3-Way 4-Pole Blade?
Okay... I'm home now and can spend a little time on this post!
I mentioned earlier that I've learned to hate the 5-way blade switch on "Lita," my 2010 RG3EXFM1. All my other electrics have 3-way toggles, and I keep bumping this one into a position I don't want. I upgraded the pickups a couple of months ago from the stock Ibanez V7/V8 to GFS Dream 180s (I know, I know... but I was trying to keep cost down on this guitar after buying P-Rails for my Artcore). By the way, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like the tone of them, despite their low price!
The current configuration has the following:
• Phase Reverse on the Volume P/P
• 2-way Varitone on the Tone P/P
• 5-Way Switch positions (same as original configuration):
• Bridge Humbucker
• Bridge Split North, Neck Split South (Inner Coils)
• Both Humbuckers
• Neck Humbucker Parallel
• Neck Humbucker Series
When I got to thinking about changing to a 3-way blade, I knew that I'd be losing the sounds from 2 & 4, so I decided to replace the varitone (which I barely use) with a coil split (same way... Bridge North & Neck South).
That was going to be it, but I got to thinking about ArtieToo's Slutbucker and thought it would be pretty cool to have, but I ONLY wanted it to come on in the center position of the switch. I have a few 2-Way 4PDT Minis around, so I'll use one of those for the Slutbucker, but I needed the 4-Pole pickup selector (actually 3 would have been sufficient) in order to make it work the way I wanted... so that the center position could be switchable, whether split or series, to the Slutbucker without affecting positions 1 or 3 when it as on. This is what I came up with:
Things you might need to know:
• GFS Pickups employ the same colors as Seymour Duncan
• I have the bridge pickup flipped because I wanted the inner coils when split, but to still be hum free.
• The switch is wired kind of backward from normal with each pickup going to a "common" on different poles and the output to volume coming off of switch positions.
• I needed the 3rd pole for the green "South Start" wire from the neck pickup so that I could switch off its connection to ground in the middle position, moving that connection decision to the Slutbucker control.
• I hard-wired positions 2 and 4 to be the same as 1 and 3, just in case I have trouble physically modifying the switch to 3-way.
Please give me your input, suggestions, etc. I'm really interested to hear what you think!
