3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

I had an idea for a modification to my RG, but it would require a 3-way, 4-pole blade-style switch. Is there such a thing?

so kinda like a superswitch but with 3 positions.. ? i have never seen one but im not all knowing and seeing... no matter what the voices in my head said.so many they had top elect one as a spokes voice.. LOL... obvious workaround is to use a 5 way super and wire it so position one is 1 and 2 and three is 4 and 5..i know not a pretty solution and if you have OCD's , this might cause you to go shoot up a mall or something

Still with 24 contacts?

You could achieve that by modifying the "stop" ridges on the switch chassis of a five-way lever switch.

3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

Yeah, like a 5-way super but with only 3 positions. I'm learning to hate the 5-way... always bumping it into a position I didn't want. I'd go toggle-style but I just think it would look funny having the slot for the blade there. My idea (without getting into too much detail since I'm typing on my phone) involves the use of a 4-pole 2-way mini, but I would need 1 more pole on a standard Tele-style switch.

Modifying the stop ridges on a 5-way would probably work, but I'd prefer to get something designed for it.

Re: 3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

I'll post a diagram later of what I'm trying to accomplish... I think it's a pretty cool and useable idea, and it involves a version of the Slutbucker... the brainchild of ArtieToo. I finished the diagram last night using a 5-way with the intention of physically modifying the switch to be 3-way. When I get a chance to get it uploaded, I'd appreciate having some extra eyes check it out and some feedback.

Re: 3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

Okay... I'm home now and can spend a little time on this post!

I mentioned earlier that I've learned to hate the 5-way blade switch on "Lita," my 2010 RG3EXFM1. All my other electrics have 3-way toggles, and I keep bumping this one into a position I don't want. I upgraded the pickups a couple of months ago from the stock Ibanez V7/V8 to GFS Dream 180s (I know, I know... but I was trying to keep cost down on this guitar after buying P-Rails for my Artcore). By the way, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like the tone of them, despite their low price!

The current configuration has the following:

• Phase Reverse on the Volume P/P
• 2-way Varitone on the Tone P/P
• 5-Way Switch positions (same as original configuration):
• Bridge Humbucker
• Bridge Split North, Neck Split South (Inner Coils)
• Both Humbuckers
• Neck Humbucker Parallel
• Neck Humbucker Series

When I got to thinking about changing to a 3-way blade, I knew that I'd be losing the sounds from 2 & 4, so I decided to replace the varitone (which I barely use) with a coil split (same way... Bridge North & Neck South).

That was going to be it, but I got to thinking about ArtieToo's Slutbucker and thought it would be pretty cool to have, but I ONLY wanted it to come on in the center position of the switch. I have a few 2-Way 4PDT Minis around, so I'll use one of those for the Slutbucker, but I needed the 4-Pole pickup selector (actually 3 would have been sufficient) in order to make it work the way I wanted... so that the center position could be switchable, whether split or series, to the Slutbucker without affecting positions 1 or 3 when it as on. This is what I came up with:

Things you might need to know:
• GFS Pickups employ the same colors as Seymour Duncan
• I have the bridge pickup flipped because I wanted the inner coils when split, but to still be hum free.
• The switch is wired kind of backward from normal with each pickup going to a "common" on different poles and the output to volume coming off of switch positions.
• I needed the 3rd pole for the green "South Start" wire from the neck pickup so that I could switch off its connection to ground in the middle position, moving that connection decision to the Slutbucker control.
• I hard-wired positions 2 and 4 to be the same as 1 and 3, just in case I have trouble physically modifying the switch to 3-way.

Please give me your input, suggestions, etc. I'm really interested to hear what you think!

Re: 3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

Okay... here's an updated version with the actual 3-way Super. I also stuck in a diagram of how the 2-way 4PDT works for clarification.

Re: 3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

It's a totally different orifice. But thanks for giving me credit for something that PRS came up with years before. Probably someone else before them. I just didn't know it at the time.

Now, if I can just bring to fruition, my user configurable multi-mode blade switch, you can finish your project, and I'll be a millionaire. :)

Re: 3-Way 4-Pole Blade?

Well, I ordered the 3-Way Super Switch and got things up and running today. I had to make some adjustments to my original diagram because the Slutbucker was splitting the coils when the pickup selector was in positions 1 and 3 as well.

By the way, if you order one of these Super 3-Ways from AZGuitarParts, just know that the mounting screws are TOO LONG. They were touching the commons on two of the poles, shorting them out... and that was even after going through about 1/4" of wood. It'd be really bad if you were mounting it to a pickguard. Just replaced them with some shorter screws I had hanging around and then it worked fine.

Anyway, here's the updated diagram that does everything I wanted it to do:

I like the Slutbucker option as an addition to having the two pickups in parallel. It sounds very similar, but a little more "middy." It breaks up a little smoother when adding some dirt, though.
