Hello, SDUGF

I've been looking around for a couple of days for a schematic of this wiring but I couldn't turn anything up. Finding a 3-way rotary switch for sale was hard enough.

Does anyone have a diagram for wiring a 3-way rotary switch as a standard 3-way toggle switch?

I'm looking for standard Gibson 3-way wiring:
Pos 1 (A)
Pos 2 (A+B)
Pos 3(B)

Also, will the rotary switch need a specific number of poles for it to function as a toggle switch?

Here's the only one I could find:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150511767346&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

The number of poles aren't listed

Thanks!

Hey Shas; I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts, that's a 5-way switch. Look closely at the center "ring" and you'll see two terminals. Those connect to their respective five terminals on the outer ring. It doesn't make sense that the original switch manufacturer would provide five terminals, then only do three "clicks".

I see, I see.

In that case, is there any way to wire a 5-way rotary switch to perform as a 3-way toggle switch?

Sure, if you don't mind it going: neck, neck, both, bridge, bridge.

Just solder a jumper to blue 1-2-3 and then on to red 3-4-5. In other words, all six of those terminals get shorted together. Now take a jumper from those six out to the volume control. Lastly, connect the bridge hot to one common and the neck hot to the other.

Edit: When I say a jumper from those six, I mean one wire only. They're already shorted together.

I don't mean to trouble you but you would you mind drawing it out? I managed to get an actual layout of a 5 position, 4 pole rotary switch.

If not, I'll be back in a little to clarify it to make sure I have it right. Much appreciated!

No prob. Strip enough insulation from a wire to make that "green" loop. Solder the loop to all those terminals. Then just add the neck and bridge "hot" wires.

Keep in mind, you're wasting a complex switch on a simple function. ;)

That seems simple enough. I'll give it a shot soon! (or PM you if it all goes wrong, haha :lmao:)

Re: 3-Way Rotary Pickup Selector Wiring?

On the old-fashioned rotary switches, the number of selectable positions could be chosen with an "end stop" set by the user.

Regarding parts supplies, think beyond guitar part retailers. Try radio specialists and/or mail order electronic component outlets.
