That one is 1200W. Imagine how loud it is! :laugh2:

But seriously, it's a bass head. It's designed to deliver strong, clear lows and a huge dynamic range. For that to happen you need a lot of power and a lot of headroom. 300 watts tube isn't exceptionally much in this application, it's a standard.

Even more powerful is this http://ashdownmusic.com/products/1/Bass-Amplification/1/Valve/1/427-Small-Block/. That said I don't think that bassman is intended for anyone other then bass players and as vinta9e pointed out you need alot of watts to get clean strong lows 1200 watts isn't abnormal for ss bass heads as generally you want a mostly clean sound (and the whole thing of tube is louder then ss doesn't apply when you are talking below a certain amount of THD because a watt is a watt).

Re: 300 Watt super bassman?

Bass needs that kind of power to keep up (cleanly) with a 50 watt guitar amp.

Ever wonder why big PA systems need huge bass cabinets and yet the top-end components are so much smaller ? Same principle. Amplifying bass frequencies is a lot less efficient and needs a lot more wattage to balance with the higher frequencies.

Lmfao

"A four string guitar tuned an octave lower? Who would EVER use that except bass players?"

300 WATTS why? Who would ever use a head like this except a bass player? I can only imagine how loud it is.

A pretty nice amp, but the older Bassman 300 Pro seems better. It only had a single input with pad switch instead of two separate sets and the 2nd channel was foot-switchable pretty much the same as this one. The real bonus of the older version was the onboard multi-band compressor that this doesn't seem to have; it also had a switchable 10 band graphic EQ. I remember thinking it was like an SVT with better tone controls and a really useful compressor when I demoed one a few years ago.

They're meant for bass amps. The only Bassman fender ever made that was actually MARKETED to guitarists was the 59 Bassman Reissue, in its various incarnations.

Some of us ...ahem..."more experienced" players might remember Fender's PS400 bass amp that would crank out 450 watts of tube power into three enclosures.

And don't forget the Mesa 400+.

I've read of a guy using a QSC 3402 in his bass rig.

300 Watts is more or less par for the course for a bass amp in a rock band, as others have said it`s all about efficiency and clean headroom. 1000Watt bass amps are not a rare sight at festivals.
