311 Guitarist Tim Mahoney

Hello I am about to have a guitar with the same pickups and wood as the lead guitarist for 311 Tim Mahoney. I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp and I want to know a TRUE BYPASS pedal that will recreate his overdriven/distorted tone. He uses Mesa amps and I want to get a tone similar to his. Ideas?

Hey bro...I was in a bar band that did a few 311 songs a while back and I got pretty close with my trusty Pro Co Rat...do NOT forget the Boss OC-2 Octave...Tim uses his all the time and it shows. There is also a Boss Distortion called the Mega Distortion, I have heard that it sounds a lot like a Dual Recto but I have never used one.

Re: 311 Guitarist Tim Mahoney

I myself have never used a Mega dist. or Pro Co Rat.

But The Mesa/Boogie v-twin all-tube pedal gets you mark III/IV tones very nicely...
Although, not as good as an actual mark 3 or 4, but still very good...

Re: 311 Guitarist Tim Mahoney

Last I heard, Tim was using a mix of Bogner Uberschalls, Mesa Triple Recs, and a Rivera I didn't catch the name of...

If you're on a budget, a SansAmp will bring you close to his Mesa sounds. Not sure if it's true bypass or not.

Re: 311 Guitarist Tim Mahoney

I got a very convincing 311 tone when I still had my PODxt, with the Bogner Uberschall model in the Modern model pack. The Boss octaver will definitely help. One of my favorite songs of theirs is "Homebrew", and the OC-2 is critical for the intro.

He uses Bad Cat amps for his clean sounds as well.
