335 1 volume / 2 volume switch

Re: 335 1 volume / 2 volume switch

I haven't forgotten. Hopefully, today.

My wife's ToDo list trumps yours. :D

No hurry on the schematic. Both Mouser and CE distribution report a 16 week lead time to get the pot. Lets see... 16 weeks, that's 4 months. Great, I should have it in time for those up coming gigs in February 2019!

Re: 335 1 volume / 2 volume switch

I've converted all my main 2 vol 2 tone instruments to 1 vol 1 tone, and so I did with my strat.

I do the same.

Two tones are redundant when you have both pickups on. Each one affects both pickups.

When I had an ‘81 Les Paul I rewired the volumes so they didn’t interact (like a Rick) and a master tone. I put a Varitone switch in the empty hole. [emoji2]

Now you've piqued my interest. Is this different than the classic 50's mod?

It’s different. The way Gibson does it, the pickup connects to the outside lug on the pot. So when you turn the volume down it mutes both pickups. This is because it’s shunting the output to ground.

On a Rick or Fender Jazz Bass the pickup connects to the middle lug and the output is on the outside lug. This way you can turn one pickup all the way off and not kill the output.

The only downside is a slight rolloff of highs when the pot is part way down. But it’s hardly noticeable.

But that is the 50's mod. Which I don't like because as you roll the volume down, you also "load down" the pup. Changing its sonic character. I have a solution to this if I can just get Bourns to sell me the pot. (Potentiometer, I mean.)

Re: 335 1 volume / 2 volume switch

I originally wired my home-built guitar that way. I did not know what I did not like about it, but there was something I didn't like about it and the first time I had the back plate off I switched it back to the usual outside lug scheme. Being able to blend the two pickups was fun but not fun enough for the tradeoffs for me.
