335 bridge P/U suggestions

Howdy,

The '59 (b) was too trebly in my Maple-necked ES-335. The replacement DiMarzio 36th anniversary (bridge) is just a bit too "middy" and lacking some for treble.

What suggestions would you have for a bridge P/U for my 335 that is halfway between the two? BTW, my main amp is a Carmen Ghia; a trebly amp. I'm interested in vintage-voiced. And please, no suggestions about "open magnet surgery"; I can't even fix a salad. Chime in!

PS: FWIW, my current neck P/U is an Air Classic and I'm quite pleased with it.

lol - kojak was gonna tell you to go for an a8 magnet swap! Now he cant!
have you considered a custom custom? that'll give your amp a serious kick in the pants!

I have a maple neck Epiphone B. B. King Lucille model. My bridge/treble PU is a Brobucker.

Lookin' at the neck p'up and the fact that by the OP's own admission and I quote "I can't even fix a salad", my advice would've actually been the CS '78 in this case.

So there! :bling: :naughty: :joke:

Howdy,

Kojak: Custom shop '78? Looks I've a bit of research to do; I've never heard of it. Thanks.

An AII magnet would do wonders in a 335. The Alnico II pro bridge would be a great choice. I also have a set of Slash pickups in a Les Paul and have fallen in love with my Les Paul all over again. A 335 granted is a very different guitar but I think they could work too. The Slash pickups are just a bit overwound and a little hotter, still warm & sweet but the can growl with the best of them.

Howdy,

Jake: My ES-335 was made in 1980. I don't know what kind of pots are in it.

A2P or maybe a PGb. This thread https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=191539 has some good observations regarding A2P in the bridge position.

I found out 59b too trebly and thin in my Epi Dot too. Now it has A2Pb with great result (pair it with 59n). Fatter and the bite is there.

I dunno the Gibson 57's sound perfectly fine in a 335 to me. Duncan 59's are more aggressive treble wise and have a mid scoop. It sounds more like Angus Young tone. 57 classics are alnico II so they have more mids. The 57's played everything fine in my opinion, probably not metal but everything else sounded great. It's a never ending search the sound in your head though, that's for sure.

But really, you should consider magnet swapping. Very simple, quick, and cheap.

You could take that '59b and swap in a rough cast unoriented A5 magnet and it may be exactly what you're looking for. It takes about 15 minutes and about $5. If you change your own strings, changing a mag is just as easy.
