36 frets?! WTF?!

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

I need to learn to play the first 22 well before I bother with another entire octave!

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

Anyway Uli Jon Roth has a 36 fret guitar or 32 I don't remember.

That's actually kind of a cool looking guitar . . . I can get on board with something like that.

I've heard one or two of those played.. and it sounds hideous. The regular 24 frets sound alright but.. well.. guitar amps just don't actually sound pleasant above that octave, its like bees flying in your ears, stinging your brain.

Or worse: violins.

Bahahahahahaha

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

Would you believe that the part that caught my interest was your PC's case?

I've never seen a HAF without those fugly red LEDs, plus, I like the color better too!

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

These things are bonkers. I can barely get my sausage fingers between the last two frets on a Soloist. I'd need a razor blade to play those notes. :eyecrazy:

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

Self depreciating humor, man. He's just joking around saying he sucks.

I know, but even so, whenever people make these jokes, I get the feeling they think there's element of truth to it.
A lot of people are hesitant to try out extended range instruments in fear of it being "too difficult", when in reality, most people that make the switch to say, a 6 to a 7 string guitar, or a 7 to 8 string get their head around it rather quickly.
It's just another tool in the box, not some strange or weird instrument.
I think it would be awesome to see more people getting into 7, 8 or even 9 string guitars, in addition to playing their 6 strings.

Well, I agree with you there. My first venture into an extended range was my old Hamer Californian. It has an angled 27 fret neck and since I got it years ago, I've been intrigued about guitars with 24+ necks. It does come to a point where it would be physically impossible to play just by standard fingering. A slide maybe but then what would the point of all the extra frets be? Either way I'm all for breaking the traditional mold. In a field where individualism is key, it's definitely a welcome addition.

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

I am looking at a newspaper article right now. A guy named: Yiannis Kapoulas from right here in Toronto (Hamilton). And he plays a home made small body triple neck. The triple neck is as follows. The bottom one is a 12 string fretless. The middle one is a Greek bouzouki, and the top one is a Turkish cumbus saz. No idea how they actually sound, because I've only heard pretty traditional music so far from this guy. But very intrigued.

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

Yeah, from the name alone I can tell you this guy is Greek, perhaps 2nd generation Canadian AT MOST (plus, his face is completely Greek too).

I can have a pretty good idea where his music gravitates to...

Re: 36 frets?! WTF?!

Indeed. You can see him in that picture holding various Greek stringed instruments apart from bouzouki such as those used in cretan and aegean music etc.

As for the extended instruments, actually I'm a 6-string guy because the guitar still serves me well as it is (as far as my knowledge and music style goes) and also I like the look of 6-strings more....well.....yeah.:P
