4 Conductor Wire Guage?

PoorMan

My wire strippers are too big to strip 4 conductor wire. I've been using a razor blade and (frankly) that's slow, stupid, and dangerous. Anyone know what size stripper (wire, that is...wiseguys.) I need to strip 4 conductor wire?

Thanks.

I use an exacto knife. It may be slow, its safe if you're careful, and I've never had good results with multi-strand strippers. And I've got access to some of the best in the world. You might want to stick with the way you do it now.

Hopefully, others will have more ideas.

Wow! I assumed there must be a better way. So how does on keep from sawing through the wire? Just by being careful?

Yes. I lay the wire on a small board, then lay the blade on the side of the cable and gently roll the cable like a rolling pin. All the while pressing gently with the blade. Practice on a few cables. Works like a charm once you get the "feel".

Well...that's pretty much how I've been doing it (but with a razor blade). I'll try an exacto. Thanks for the info, Artie.

Re: 4 Conductor Wire Guage?

I go the other way. Use a wire cutter thats too small but cuts enough to get it started. Often after a 3/4ths of the way thru cut a couple light tugs gets the rest of the cover to break free without any cutting that gets close to the wire. Haven't harmed one yet this way.

Patience as always is really the virtue that matters as much as the tools. I never do wire work after dinner or when I'm feeling rushed.

This may sound lame and I don't necessarily recommend it, but I use my front teeth. I've got the right feel and can do it pretty accurately.

Oh man this rolling method is WAY better than sawing at the wires with a razor blade (The was I was doing it). This is much cleaner and much faster. :beerchug:

same here. you don't have tpo bite through, just put enough pressure to pull off what you need. works like a charm so far.

Re: 4 Conductor Wire Guage?

I use small snips, in the same way that the guys use their teeth. I used to use my teeth, but with some of the equipment I was working with and the amount of wire I was replacing, I was in danger of wearing them out.

Re: 4 Conductor Wire Guage?

This style of stripper works well on smaller wires.
