4000 posts on coil splits , but just this simple one, I can't find

hi-
is there a way to disable one coil of a humbucker to make it a single coil?
Without push-pull pots or extra switches mounted to the body?
So in a permanent but non-destructive, reversible way?
Hope that make sense.

thanks for your patience

(pickup in question is a Fralin unbucker in the neck of a Les Paul, still too boomy...... I WANT it thin and weak! For brighter middle position sound)

the issue is, the bucker uses a bar mag while a single coil uses a magnet in each polepiece. other wise you could do it, i guess

OK thanks..

Yes I think it does have 4 wires. (from memory )

Just hard-wire it split:

Absolutely... just don't wire up both coils. For Fralin, if you want the slug coil on then wire white to hot and green to ground. Just isolate the black and red wires... leave them completely out of the circuit.

OK thanks all!
(I'll check my colors on the Fralin)

The colors I mentioned should be for Fralin, at least according to Stew Mac. ;) For Duncan, you'd do black and white for slug, red and green for screw.

Just hard-wire it split:

after doing some reading I think I'd like to split it to keep the Screw coil. I want thinner and weaker in my case.

From your diagram, the green (or whatever was the insulated ground wire) stays gound to the pot,
then,
ALL the other wires, soldered together, go to the hot lug on the pot?

thanks

Fralin colors... red to hot, black to ground. Insulate the leads of the white and green and do not connect them to anything. That completely removes the possibility of the slug coil introducing any RF noise into the circuit. If you find that is out of phase with the bridge pickup, simply switch the red and black wires.

What about a spin-a-split, which convert the tone pot to a volume pot for one of the coils (coil cut), and you get that desirable unbalanced coils sound in the in between positions. No push-pull needed.

not sure if it is possible but u could try and perminantly wire it in parallel, to get a thinner singlecoily sound without hum

Re: 4000 posts on coil splits , but just this simple one, I can't find

Of course parallel is possible. For Fralin send white and red to hot, black and green to ground. For Duncan it's black and red to hot, white and green to ground.

well as it turns out, i am retarted. at first i thought you meant like physically split it in half. i will now go and shut up :D

Re: 4000 posts on coil splits , but just this simple one, I can't find

Remove the 6 adjustalbe screws from the pickup.

!!!!! that sounds like my kind of job... !! I'd like to try this first

So in effect, (or in reality) , I'll be hearing just the slug coil?
and the screw coil is de-emphasized... by ALOT ?

thanks
