Who's done it and what do you think of it ? Thinking of doing it myself , want a big sounding classic / hard rock sound for my les paul DC standard..

Re: 498T with A8.....

For me it works in SG's, and they're similar to your DC LP. The 498T is kind of bright and scooped, and an A8 just filled in the mids, and still left enough treble (more so than a CC) so I get bite & crunch. Gives a better-balanced sound; not so top heavy. I'd call that 'big' and full.

I'm playing early Zeppelin, Cream, and Chicago blues, and it's a great tone for what I do. Worst case scenario is you'd dial in a little more treble at the amp, and that only helps the neck PU.

In an arched top LP, I might be fine with the stock A5 in a 498T, but without all that mass, it's pretty scooped.

Just did the swap..... sounds great , just as you described blue man!!!

doesnt seem as focused and sterile as the A5 , more crunchy and sweeter highs...reminds me alot of an A2 but with the bottom not as spongey.. in between A5 and A2 bottom... , responds to vol rol back great and has great dynamics with picking , I hit it hard and its huge crunch , I hit it soft and it cleans up.... great for AC/DC stuff..........LURVES the marshall!!!:cool3:

Gald you like it. That's what I hear too, a 'product improved' A2. I don't want an A8 in every bridge PU of mine, but it's definitely in some. Whenever I need warmth with more output & a tight low end, A8's are a possibility. It's a good option to have available.

I do... and I do! At this moment, all my HB bridge p'ups are A8.

SD Custom
Gibson '57 Classic Plus
Jazz Bridge
P-94T (A5/A8)

Greatest sounding magnet for the bridge position.
