4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Man my favorite combination is 4x10's! Bassman's, Super Reverbs! If I could find a 4x10 cab to match my Dr. Z I'd totally play through it instead of the 2x12..or maybe in addition to! That would be so tight. 4x10 and 2x12....got it all man!

Hey Capo....I've got a Marshall 1965B 4x10 & sometimes use the Celtic Edana w/both the 4x10 & a Marshall 1966A 2x12(V30/H30).

Together, they sound awesome.

The 65As & Bs are fairly easy to find....the 66A OR B are very hard to find, esp. in decent condition, but you could always grab a 65 & make a 2x12 baffle for it.

24" x 24"....big sound at 1/2 the weight & size of a full on 4x12 :bigthumb:

The 66A is in my avatar & I'm thinking of getting the 65B covered the same...nice "full" stack; 2x12 top/4x10 bottom :D

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I use a Marshall 1965B loaded with 2 ceramic Celestion G10L-35s & 2 alnico Weber Blue Pups.....My Overbuilt Clubber sounds AMAZING now, since I swapped out 2 Jensens for the Blue Pups :headbang:
I got a question for you, this is what I am looking in a 4X12 cab for my Laney: I want my bridge humbucker palm mutes/pick harmonics in the style of Kai Hansen(Gamma Ray)/Kiko Loureiro(Angra)/Emppu Vuorinen(nightwish) and Violinish neck single coil leads like Uli Roth/Blackmore/YJM will an X pattern of V30/blue pups or G12-75/BluePups get me there? Thanks.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

The other guitarist in my band is currently using an old Acoustic brand 6 x 10 with his JCM 900. I've never been crazy about those amps but I will admit the cab sounds fantastic.

Beats the crap out of me...Not my style at all :dunno:

I'm sure someone wiser than I might chime in, but the OD is definitely smoother violin-like with a little more sustain.

BTW, if you're using a 4x12, you'll want Blue DOGS....Blue PUPS are 10s

Hey Puck, I've been looking for a nice 2x12 for quite some time and currently I've got an opportunity to get an unloaded 1966a. Previously I missed out on a ebay auction since I stupidity forgot to bid. This time I'm thinkin' of snapping this one up.

I could save up for a locally made boutique 2x12 or get this 1966a and some celestion speakers for less than half the price. What do ya think?

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I sold my beloved Classic 30 and ext cab stuffed with Celestions...for a Super Reverb. I had a 4-10 brown Concert amp ages ago and loved that punch...hearing you guys rave about the 4-10s makes me smile...can't wait to try it on our next gig...sounded sweet in the studio!

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Just when I settle on what cab I'm going to get for my new Orange. You guys have to spring this crap on me!

4x10's not being as directional really interests me. I know I hate when I go to shows I can usually only hear the guitarist on the side I am standing (I am a Front Row Junkie).

And a Splawn 4x10 is the same cost as a Standard 2x12...hmmm.

Are 4x10's much smaller than 4x12's? The main problem with my 4x12 was it being too big to fit in cars, and it was just a pain to carry.

At circa 42 Lbs my Mesa 4X10 is 2 Lbs *lighter* than my Mesa "Half Back" 1X12. The dimensions run about 2 feet by 2 feet by a foot-ish. Try getting your 4X12 to do that. My Marshall 1960's are going around 90 to 100 Lbs (?)-ish, and obviously have much larger dimensions at something near 32x32x18.

For tone, I would say tighter base, super punch, extra "cut" and straight cab directionality. Not too shabby.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

Sorry about my crappy photo / internet skills. Background : full Marshall stack. Foreground : Mesa 1x12, with Mesa 4X10 in the middle. See above for approximate weight dimensions.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

hehe, you'll have to ask on a I love my 4-12's post...I think everyone is sold on the pros of 4-10s now. Nice gear ya got.

I personally LOVE these little monsters....what's the asking price?

The 66s don't pop up as often as the 65s...

It's got a decent amount of 4x12 girth going on at 1/2 the size & weight...the only problem is being 24" across, some heads hang over the edge.

Very easy to throw in MOST cars rear seat or trunk...

I made some back panels for mine....run it either as a closed or open back...

AGAIN, I love mine :bigok:

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

$350 AUD including postage. It's a reasonable price here. I've seen people trying to sell them off for over $600 with the speakers still in 'em. I'm still REALLY kicking myself for forgetting that ebay auction over 6 months ago. It went for $315 with Celestion G12T-75's.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

The 65s loaded usually go in the $300-400USD range, so....I'm not sure of the conversion, but if it seems to be a good price, I think you'll like that cab !

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

I just posted some pics of my 4 x 10 in another post ref Mahogony 4 x 10's, if anyone likes it they should check out www.mongotone.co.uk Cheers

These look really awesome, and I would buy their entire stock, but being in the UK : 1 ) shipping would be a killer to the US, and 2 ) the American Dollar is very week right now against foreign currencies, and would probably make these extremely expensive to me, unless there is already a major US destributor. Darn.

Re: 4X10s : The forgotten guitar cabs ?

James Byrd use old Marshall ones. I can't give any actual gear suggestion, but there you can hear how it sounds.
Yeah dude I know, I've mention him in this thread in the very begining. :)
