"4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

Can you even get those anymore? Last I heard the guy was taking an exceedingly long time to fill orders and it was like getting blood from a turnip trying to get ahold of the builder. Is the builder still in business or did things collapse in on themselves?

He's always sort of been like that. I ordered mine in early 2007 and was quoted 6 weeks delivery; the actual time frame was closer to 8-10 weeks.

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

My two cents...

I think this is a silly idea, for many of the reason cited above: the bulkiness, the excess weight of the wood in the cab, and the probability of poor tone with this configuration.

What I would suggest is a Mesa Boogie 112 Thiele cab with a C-90 or and older model with an EVM. Portable, yet with the EVM it can hang with most 412s. Lots of low-end thump and projection due to the ported enclosure. This a PRO cab and will last years, and hold its value. Highly recommended with most Mesa combos, and this cab will turn a small amp like a Deluxe Reverb into a monster.

I know you don't want to hear it. But this is the way to go.

Or maybe a 15?

I play through this 1x15 it is 100w and sounds great with my Micro Terro or my DSL 100w. It is a Celestion Fullback in a Rocket Cab I can pick it up with one hand and carry it for miles.

I would run it with the MicroDark, but, yeah!

That would work, any lunchbox really would. The nice thing is the head fits in the back of the cab.

That cab with 20 watts pushing it will sound way out of proportion to It's size.

I need to take the back off of my cab! I have a Micro Terror and a Legacy 2x12.

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

I'll second the vote of confidence in the 15" Speaker. I've always wanted one of those Fender Vibroverb reissues with the 15" in it. Great sound, hard to believe it's just one speaker too. They really did a good job pairing it with that amp.

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

You could take an existing 4x12" and remove three of the speakers. Screw on wooden baffles to cover the empty speaker holes. Would not be perfect, but does the single speaker really have to be in the centre?

An addendum to my post, just take three speakers out and see if you like it. It's about as 80-20 pareto as you can get. All you're doing is subtracting from what you already have. The acoustic physics might be off but just try it anyways.

This is a tidy setup. I can't believe how much tone and power Orange have managed to cram into such a small package and why it wasn't done earlier!

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

Not sure Im adding anything, but parroting something prev said. If you have a cab the same size as a 4x12, and its quality construction, its still going to have some weight to it. the reduction of speakers will save some weight, but seems to me you would want to reduce the bulk.

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

get a 2x12 lol, or just remove three speakers lol either way.. I wou'd just get a 2x12, even a mesa verticle 2x12 would looks cool if it's the looks you are after...

I had heard that too. Ive always heard the 2x12s from them are killer, but was scared because of this info.. Out of curiousity, I went to the site to see and they have a bulletin up that they have currently suspended taking orders for 14 days to get prev orders out. No date on it tho. So, maybe they have learned to control flow....??

I see them come up on the used market pretty cheap every now and then. There's been one for $350 on the Minneapolis Craigslist for at least the last 4-6 weeks.

Re: "4x12-sized" 1x12 cabinet

There is historical precedent for OP's request - I'm reading a book about the history of the guitar, and there's a quote from Roger Daltrey of The Who:

"We hit on the idea of having the biggest cabinets you've ever seen in your life," Daltrey said, "yet inside we'd have this little 12-inch speaker in the bottom."

The book then goes on to observe how Jim Marshall was initially outraged at the Marshall stack as an "irresponsible use of his speakers". :D
