5-way switch able to do series / parallel

Hi, everyone,

Is there a 5-way switch able to do the following on a guitar with 4 conductor bridge humbucker and a neck Rails (it's a HS guitar):

Position 1- bridge in series;
Position 2- bridge in parallel;
Position 3- bridge and neck in parallel (typical LP middle position);
Position 4- neck in parallel;
Position 5- neck in series;

Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure you need a "superswitch", which is like your standard Fender style 5 way but with more connection lugs. It allows for many more wiring options.

Great idea for the 5 way! I believe you'd need a Super Switch for that, however.

Yes, easily accomplished with a superswitch. But can't be done with the standard 5-way. You would need to add another DPDT if you kept your switch.

You’re mixing two different definitions of parallel and series here; parallel coils in 2 and 4, and parallel pickups with coils in series in position 3. I don’t think this will work even with a superswritch. The super switch has four sets of lugs. Two of those sets you need for pickup selection. That leaves only two sets of lugs to route the two series link wires of each pickup to different connections to put their coils in parallel. I think you’re going to run out of lugs.

Thanks, everyone!

beaubrummels, would a Megaswitch have enough lugs for what I need?

The E-model megaswitch (StewMac, if that’s what you’re looking at) has 12 lugs. A 5-way superswitch has 20 lugs and 4 separate ‘common’ lugs. But it isn’t only a matter of lug count, but how the switch actually works.

I can’t see the circuit board well enough in the pictures to tell what’s possible with a megaswitch. If someone has ever posted a wiring diagram of the E-model, then we can figure it out.

Re: 5-way switch able to do series / parallel

If the Superswitch is not able to do it, you could consider using a normal three way switch, and still accomplishing your Position 2 and 4 goals by wiring up either a push-pull pot or a mini-switch to switch both pickups at once, from each pup's coils being in series with each other or in parallel w each other. The seymour duncan wiring diagrams page has some diagrams for this.

Of course you could also wire up a 2nd push pull or mini seitch to handle each pickup's series/parallel status indepedently - if you needed/wanted that

This diagram did what you were looking for and then some. Does everything you ask and and also has out of phase and splits as well.

Thanks, guys, but I really wanted, if possible, to avoid using push-pulls on this one...
