5 way switch

with 5 way switches and 2 humbuckers, what kind of switching options would be useful?

i was thinking:
position 1: neck bucker
position 2: neck split
position 3: neck + bridge bucker
position 4: bridge split
position 5: bridge bucker

but then i thought it would be awkward switching from one bucker to the other because youd need to go thru all the splitting options as well

what type of setup would you recommend?

Re: 5 way switch

If you have at least two pots, you can install push/pull pots for two of them and make it so when pot 1 is pulled up, it is split and when pushed down it is full. Same thing with the other pot for the other humbucker. With that setting you probably get more versatility, because you get:
Neck Bucker only
Neck split only
Neck split, Bridge full
Neck full, Bridge split
Neck and Bridge Full
Neck and Bridge split
Bridge Full only
Bridge split.

Hope I didn't forget any others, but thats 8 options as opposed to 5 on the switch. Much more versatility and less awkward switching.

I am doing that style I mentioned to my telecaster. I just have to pick the pickups to pop in it.

Hope I helped.

Re: 5 way switch

im not a big fan of push/pull pots tbh, i find them very difficult to change quickly mid song, so i think ill just stick with 2 normal pots and a standard 5 way switch

Re: 5 way switch

Or if you want, you can place two On-Off switches on the pickgaurd (if you feel like cutting the PG) in place on the push-pull. Switch one way, split. The other, full.

I can sweep from position 1 to position 5 in a mili-second! What's awkward about that? :) None of my Strats are wired in the way you describe...is it possible? Lew

Re: 5 way switch

It will be hard to get many variations with 2 HBs and a std 5-way switch. The way to do it with all stock pots and switch is to wire the bridge pickup to the bridge position and the neck pickup to the mid position. That will give you bridge, bridge/neck and neck in the middle.

From there you can use the opposite side of the switch to split the neck pickup in the #2 position and by connecting the red/white wires from the bridge pickup to the final terminal on the hot side of the 5 way you'll get bridge/neck split in #2 and bridge split in #1.

bridge
bridge/neck
neck
bridge/neck split
bridge split

There should be a schematic foir this in the schematic section off of the SD main page. Click on the big SD logo at the top of this page to get there.

nice that seems like a good setup, but instead of bridge/neck split, i would like to have neck bucker with a bridge split, is that possible? and the final position to be a neck split instead

so itd be like
bridge
bridge/neck
neck
neck/bridge split
neck split

Re: 5 way switch

Go to the Seymour Duncan Company main page, click support, click schematics and do a quick search for two humbuckers and a 5-way switch. You'll find pretty much all that's possible to do there. I don't think there's a way to do what you want with a conventional 5 way switch...but maybe. Lew

Re: 5 way switch

But he could go.....

Neck
Neck/Bridge
Bridge
Bridge/Neck split
Neck split

....by switching the neck and bridge hot connections at the switch and then use the neck red/white on the third terminal and splitting the bridge off of the opposite side of the switch. He'll have to move the tone pot feeds to the hot lead side of the switch, but thats no biggy.

Yeah, he could. And thats an interesting variation that I hadn't thought of.
I'll have to play with that on paper a bit, and see what else develops. ;)
