Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

Marshall JCM900 SL-X -> Marshall 1960AV Celestion V30s
Used for recording, rehearsal and mid-sized halls.
Does late 70's rock, punk through 80's distortion sounds. It's the KISS amp, after all.

Wallace BKW45 -> Marshall 1960BX Celestion 25w Greenbacks
Used for recording. Great all around sound. Good for clean or hard rock distortion. Probably my main recording amp.

Orange AD50 -> Marshall 1960AV Celestion V30s
Used for recording. Use the Marshall cab because I can't afford the Orange cab with V30s.
Does Sabbath-y fat distortion, Page small-amp slide distortion and growl really well.
(Sorry, I don't have a good picture to upload)

Hiwatt DR-103 -> Hiwatt 4123 Fane (purple label, Hiwatt-branded)
Used for recording. Gets Gilmour cleans and Townshend growl perfectly for me.

Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

Well, truth be told, now that Im in an apt and the storage shed I rent from doesnt allow use of the electricity, most of my practice is thru a PV classic 30. HOWEVER..... When I can rock and roll all night and party every day, I use either:
A Splawn Quick Rod with a matching Splawn 4x12 loaded with small blocks. A modded 50watt JCM800 thru either a Carvin 4x12 with their British series speakers (will prolly change one day, but dont seem to sound bad) or Avatar 2x12 cab. Or, a Peavey Ultra Plus thru either the Carvin 4x12 or the Avatar 2x12. I REALLY dont need all the firepower, but Im having a prob letting go. I love them all. the PV isnt worth much to sell.

The SPlawn and JCM sound amazing together and if I run my Rockman chorus, I have to use 2 amps.

Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

I'm currently running a JCA50H through a 412 with v30s.

I need the volume with the band. I haven't gigged with them yet so I may have to use the smaller amp then.
I like 412s for the spread of sound.

Honestly these are the cabs I could get my hands on. I'm only using them because they have
Eminence and celestion speakers, respectively. I needed a 212 for being even a bigger pain in the butt towards my neighbors and also the Marshall was too heavy for long drives. I'm not on tour!

. . . W O W !

Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

I have a Marshall JVM 410H, a Splawn Pro Mod, and a Mesa Triple Rectifier. At different times I used them in a band I used to be in, running whichever head I was using at the time into two 4x12s. Currently, I use the Splawn and the Mesa as a stereo rig, just for ****s and giggles (a Marshall tone mixed with a Mesa tone sounds nice and thick).

. . . same with a 5150/Thunderverb 50 (((stereo))) rig ;)

Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

my big rig is a '69 fender dual showman reverb head. usually I use a 2x12 vibroking cab with v30/g12h-30 speakers. big percussive bottom end and strong clear highs. I run a weber mass most of the time if I want anything but a clean sound since the amp as loud as hell if I crank it up. clean its a great platform for pedals but put that sucker on 8 and it is freakin sweet!!!

Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

My gig needs have changed quite a bit, so I'm using lower watt amps these days, but 1982-2005 found me using, at various times, a Fender Twin (not a head, but wait...), an early model 50 watt JCM 800, and a Hiwatt DR504 (50 watts). I played old school punk and hard rock, think the tones of the Pistols, Ramones, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Rose Tattoo...usually, but certainly not always, we were writing our own material, but those bands more or less cover the crunch.

Fender Twin: Sometimes added a 4x12, a Sonic loaded with Celestions, the 70s, although I blew two, and ended up with a couple of 65s in there also..
JCM 800: That same Sonic cab went under it also
Hiwatt: Had an old "vertical" Sunn 4x12, loaded with an oddball selection of speakers. IIRC, a Mesa Black Shadow, some Altec Lansing, and I don't recall the other two. The last two years I gigged with the Hiwatt, I did go down to a Sonic 2x12 with Celestions.

The reason for all the rigs was that the various bands I played in then were at pubs that wanted balls to walls volume. Sometime we had a good PA, sometimes not. From the late 90s on, there almost always was a good PA with a competent tech, so I could have easily gone to the 2x12 earlier without losing the sound.

I recorded with the Marshall and the Hiwatt, in the studio, and live. Certainly didn't need the 4x12 in the studio, but it's what I had.

Re: 50 and 100W tube head users:

I use 50 watt Marshall master volume amps with 2x12 cabs. Rig for a gig will be one of the following:

- JMP 2104 combo (pair of G12-65s)
- DSL 50 head with 1936 cab (V30/G12H-30)
- The combo and the 1936 cab together

I mostly play pub rock gigs where I'm not mic'd up. The JMP combo with its open back and G12-65s isn't super-loud and I can easily get it into the magic zone where the power tubes are sweating. The DSL is louder but depends less on power amp breakup to sound good. The JMP combo with the closed back V30/G12H-30 2x12 as an extension is fabulous.

If I was always mic'd up I'd probably use something smaller but I find a 50w MV Marshall gets me the tone and volume I want in most of the situations I play in.
