$500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

Lets say I had 500$ to blow just 500. And I'm looking for a Mofo of a heavy halfstack that I can get in that price range. With soaring cleans, and thick high output distortion.

What could I get for that 500-700$$.

Anyway got any ideas preferably with a pedal so I can switch between the channels too. I've looked at a crate that caught my eye. I looks pretty sweet anyway and I played through a smaller GLX I believe it was and it played pretty nice.

I'm just really looking for some more volume, killer tone, wicked leads, and some deep cleans.

I don't think you can get what you want in that price range....

not in a half stack anyway..u could go combo and get close to that, maybe...

I couldn't get close to a decent half stack in that range?

Combo you say huh?

I just want something that sounds better than my Envoy 110 I have here, I've had it for years. Its about time to get something new ya know?

Get the head first, and mod your combo's speaker leads, so you can plug the head into the combo, till you sell it, then buy a speaker cab when you have more money.

Used
5150
JCM2000 DSL 50
Carvin Legacy
Peavey Ultra

+1 to the re-wiring the combo.

Check out used 5150's, XXX's, Legacy's, a Rectoverb or F series if you try hard, or a Mark III.

Personally, I'd get the MarkIII, 5150, or Legacy.

I'd love to find a 500 dollar MkIII too. But then again I'd love to be married to a supermodel too.

You're about to do what MANY guitarists do. You're going to buy a halfstack for your first "real amp." Please, stop. The only new halfstack you can afford will sound like the inside of a walrus' @$$. Go for a tube combo, used or new, or a used tube head and a used cab or a cab from somewhere like www.avatarspeakers.com. Also consider that you might not, in fact probably don't, need a halfstack, when 2 12"s will do just fine. Tone is infinitely better than volume.

I was pushing his end of 700 with that one. It'd be worth it, though.
Mark III combo's can be had for 700-750.

A halfstack is way too much amp for a bedroom. I agree with Lee L that you should invest the money into a better combo. You can find some nice deals on used combos.

You'd be surprised how well a 20-30 watt combo with a single 12" speaker can fill your bedroom with sound.

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

I would agree with most here and say go used...

BUT....I have to say those B-52 solid state half stacks GC/MF has in Adam's price range is NOT a bad sounding amp...far better than the Marshall MG/Crate halfstacks, and Peavey Transtube stuff (XXL, etc)

I was pretty dang surprised, actually.

No it's not a NMV Marshall but for someone on a budget who needs a half stack, I'd def check it out.

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

You all have thrown in some good suggestions. I kind of want that big speaker the size of a refrigerator sitting in my room though :). I just want some more versatility and effects. The Crate GLX I played long ago seemed to fit the bill. So goes one of those Crate Half stacks the GT1200H/G412SL.

Thats the one that caught my attention for 499.99 from MF.

But I mean just anything that has metal written all over it and some good cleans would tickle my fancy. So I'm just looking for suggestions.

Rewiring a Peavey Envoy 110, o my. (Lacks knowledge of amps)

Looks like an interesting buy, wonder how heavy the overdrive sounds?

It'll do early Zakk and scoopy stuff if you are into that sorta thing...

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

Add to the list:
Laney AOR,
the Lee Jackson Ampegs 501/502/1001/1002,
Carvin MTS3200.

And +1 on the Avatar cab, that's about the best bang for the buck you'll find short of finding a cheap unloaded cab and buying replacement speakers at a ridiculous price.

If you have a combo now, you could also go for the 412 first, then the head. Waaaaaay back in the early 90's, I did that with my Fender M80 by adding a Sunn beta lead tall 412. I was quite impressed with the difference between 1x12 and 4x12 with ports and a big box. In the last 5 years or so, I've mostly used one or two open backed 212's which get me by in most situations, although the low end is not as tight as a closed back cab.

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

I haven't used the solid state b-52 stuff..but I do have an AT-100 (which I'm gonna be gettin' rid of just cause I have a splawn now)

but it's a great amp for the money and does high gain pretty well...the contour switch'll give you super scooped mids if that's what you're really after...

the at 100 combo is about $800

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

I've been doing some looking around, and Mark III's go for 650-700 all the time on eBay. I've got horrible GAS for one.

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

Well I am looking for high gain, wicked rythym and screaming solos ya know, thats what is really important cause I'm all about the distortion. I don't like anything that sounds fake, kind of the reason I slung digitech processors (Rp100a) long ago. It just sounds so fake.

So I guess I need that "real" sound. Which I guess is all in my mind.
