500T= what SD

This maybe a dumb question, but what Seymour Duncan is most like the Gibson 500T ?

Is it the Duncan Distortion ?

Re: 500T= what SD

I liked the rich harmonic content of 500T in my old ibanez. Under gain it had plenty of dimension, and it had a sweet 'chirp' sound to the pick attack.

Re: 500T= what SD

I think the sh5 custom is closer...It has a similar eq, but it's not the same either. The 500t is more aggressive, but not quite like a distortion.
I guess somewhere in between the two.

Re: 500T= what SD

I am a fan of the 500T. The Distortion is my #1 pickup. While they are not the same, to my old ears, they are practically close enough that I would not bother to swap one for the other.

The differences are trivial IMO. Two other people may hear the bass as tighter or the same, or the highs are slightly softer on one or the other, and two more people hear the opposite.

Just treat them the same - for all practical purposes they are.

See - I disagree with that. I think that 500T aggression is because it has the distortion EQ curve and mids.

Re: 500T= what SD

I have a Duncan Custom (SH-5) in my '77 LP standard and was a little dissapointed....I wanted it to be hotter.
I have a pair of Duncan Distortions in my '95 LP (my main axe) and really like them.
I had a 498T in a '91 Custom that I really liked, but it wasn't hot enough. I thought that maybe a 500T might give me that abrasive tone...but hotter....(or was it the Alnico 5 that I was hearing ?)
I had heard that those two (or most of the hotter) Gibson pickups were a little abrasive tone-wise (I love this).
Your thoughts ?

Maybe my ears are getting old too.
I hear more cut in the distortion, and a bigger low end in the 500t.
Both could happily be described as "abrasive".

Re: 500T= what SD

The 500T seems to have a little more treble going on while the distortion's top end seems a little smoother to me, I feel the 500T is like a distortion built for leads...the Distortion is really one of the ultimate rhythm pickups IMO.....

Re: 500T= what SD

In terms of output its the distortion. In terms of eq its the sh-5 custom. Personally imo if you like the 500t you will love the distortion.

Re: 500T= what SD

The Super Distortion is warmer than the 500T to my ears. Just sayin'

I really do not dig this pup and think just about everything in SDs arsenal is better.

Re: 500T= what SD

500T is 43AWG wound up to around 15k, so the coils are hotter than the Custom but not the same wire as the Distortion. I'd put the wind between the two. The magnets are like the Invader. One tall center magnet plus two outside magnets that are arranged so they oppose the center magnet, thus focusing the field upward.

The Distortion is the closest in sound, but a Custom, made with 3 magnets would be closer. The Invader with regular pole pieces cuts the 500T in half like a tomato in a knife commercial.

Re: 500T= what SD

the 500t kind of reminds me of the invader but less huge sounding and more one dimensional. a little more "meh".

Re: 500T= what SD

DF and the 500T are pretty close to being the same pickup.

I'm just gonna drop a Custom with a big ceramic recommendation here, if you're OK with mag swaps. Otherwise a DD or a Custom would do if you just had to have a Duncan.

Re: 500T= what SD

Technicals don't necessarily speak the sound/tone though. 15k ≠ hotness, etc...

I agree. I love both, but tend to prefer the Distortion (from the 80's). I think the 500T is also tighter and more compressed.
