500t

Evening all,

I have two Gibson V's. The 500t in one and a JB in the other.

When using the JB there is a significant volume drop.

Can anyone recommend a good pickup for heavy rock than can match the 500t volume wise and act as a good alternative to it.

Was thinking 498t but thought I'd put it out there.

Re: 500t

The 500T is going to be louder than the 498T as well.

I'm thinking Duncan Distortion or Black Winter would be a closer match output-wise.

I am using JBs, one Distortion and one 500t. The Distortion is outputwise near the 500t.

So my advice is to buy a Ceramic 8 magnet and swap it into the JB. Easy peasy mod.

BTW i also swapped out the side magnet of the 500t with wood stick which tamed it down a bit and made it a tad warmer than the Distortion. Just my liking.

Re: 500t

Adjust the JB. Output wise it should be able to hold it's own against the 500t. It isn't THAT different.

Distortion is practically 500t.

Re: 500t

I agree with the Distortion suggestions and in fact recommend it over the 500T as "similar, but better". Ironically, to me, Distortion out-Gibsons the 500T by having a hairy edge to the tone; 500T feels a little smooth to me. But if you're happy with the 500T (it's a fine pickup), then by all means keep it.

Beyond the Distortion, we're getting into territory like the Black Winter, which I haven't tried yet, and Invader, which is cool but maybe more full-on than you want.

498T in one axe I would pit against the JB in another in terms of output and voicing.

Re: 500t

I did some height adjustment and played them through my JMP1 preamp via recabinet 4. Whilst it wasn't as hot, it definitely held its own.

I want compare it in rehearsals next on the DSL and see how it pans out.

The JB is tried and tested so will work out.

That's what I was thinking...I've used both the JB and 500T (really like both!) and didn't think one was that much different in output...something else is going on here.

Like maybe a 300K pot in the JB and a 500K in the other?

The JB's lack of overall harshness as compared to the 500T may also be perceived as a volume drop. Giving the JB a ceramic magnet from a Custom, for example, may bring it up to that level.

A PATB-2 may work just as well, if the bridge is angled enough to align with one (since Gibson changed their bridge angle some years ago, many trem-spaced pickups align normally, though the PATB series may be the exception).

Re: 500t

JB held is own at rehearsals today against my Explorer loaded with the 500t. The Explorer sounded heavier in tone, but matched the V with the JB volume wise.

Re: 500t

The Exploerer, with all that mass, vs the V, and the Ceramic/EQ curve on the 500t is the reason for the difference.

Drop the 500t just a touch and they should both be fine.

By the way - we need pics of these guitars!!!

Re: 500t

This one has a 500t in the Bridge.
That's only fair, I'll get on it.
