Hoping any circuit-savvy folks here can advise me- are there reasons why this wouldn't be advisable? or is it worth trying?
On a typical Gibson or Hamer three pot harness, the connection sequence is pickups > volume pots > selector switch > master tone > output jack socket. The signal arriving at the tone pot is always going to have come from the selector switch's combined output terminals.

Fella over at another forum told me that modern wiring was impossible without two tone controls so all Vs & Explorers automatically had to be wired 50s style. That sounded unlikely to me...
