Found one local for $450. Good price or no?

I am seriously interested in getting into a tube amp and I am just checking my options.

Also found a Peavey Classic 50 4x10 combo for the same price.

2 different animals I know, but I have played both amps and enjoy them both. I want to hit some high gain tones, but I also like some more subdued tones.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

I honestly think the 5150 is the better bargain of the two !!!

(if it is in mint cond. off course)

My cousin has the 5150 combo (2x12, 60watter) and he has amazing tone !
He runs this set-up !

Ibanez RG121 -->TS9 -->TS9 --MXR10band -->5150 Como !

From blues to metal - it is all covered, no problem !!!

;)

I agree. Definately a good price and a good amp at that. Those sucka's are heavy though (both in distortion and weight).

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

I had one and loved it. I had no problems pulling some very nice tones from it. Only drawbacks are that it is very heavy and the cleans aren't that good. I say go for it.

Yeah you'll look more original with a Classic 50. 5150's just screeeeam tight pants and emocore riffs

Not as much as they scream viking war cries and beer-swigging melodeath harmonies.

5150, no doubt, unless you want some sort of clean tone. The 5150 can do mid-gain tones fairly well, but it won't touch cleans - it doesn't even have a clean channel.

That said, I've had the Classic 50 running with my axe/pedals/cabinet, and it doesn't really get into highgain territory unless you use an actual distortion pedal, which will probably sound like **** anyways.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

My Main playing right now is in church with a choir. So it is more bluesy/funk playing, but when I write or play out with my original material it is modern rock. (foo fighters, shinedown, 30 seconds to mars) I'm not into a real mushy high gain which makes all individual notes indistinguishable though. I tend to like a more "classic" high gain tone. If that makes any sense at all.

I know with the Classic I will need a pedal of some sort in the end.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

get that 2x12, you wont belive how good it sounds. and considering how it was van halens amp, (more or less) it definitly will get grat metal tones.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

The 5150 is a Great Rock/Hard Rock/Metal amp.. from crunch to mega high gain it does really well and it has a beautiful lead sound, unfortunately the clean channels a bit bland, i wouldent be playing funk with a 5150.. ofcourse there are mods that improve the clean channel greatly.

The 5150 however does have one of the best drive sounds ive heard from any amp, regardless of price, and sure im gonna say that, i own one, thats not to say i havent owned other amps, the next amp for me to go alongside it would be either a Bogner Ecstacy or a Cornford MK50II... both those amps cost probably 5 times that of a 5150..

wish i could get 5150's that cheap in this country. madness.

Id say go for it.

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

metal maniacs like those 5150s. the pro death metalers use em. chugga chug chug.

too much gain for me, widdly widdly wee :)

I choose neither. I am holding out for the jcm800, fender blackface bassman, or an orange head for my original brand of stoner rock

I have seen alot of those 5150 combos go for that price on ebay. Peaveys are dependable, so there is probably not much of a maintenance thing. $450 for a combo aint that bad. but consider it weighs 85 pounds

Re: 5150 2x12 combo.

There are about 4 5150's in my area around that price. One is a head and cab. for $450.

I may pick one up.... Hmm... what can I sell...?

Tell that to Ted Nudgent and Van Halen... heh

It depends on your play style. Yes it is alot of gain but it's no where near uncontrolable. They're purely the late VH tone, and for lower gain, ted nudgent. Then adjust your pick attack and you can riff out black metal.
