5150/6505

I'm considering a Peavey 6505+, are the channels based on specific tones, i.e. green channel= inspired by marshall, can anyone explain the channels sounds.

Re: 5150/6505

Dry, super tight, br00tal wall of sound with barbed wire on top of it. Both of them.

Inspired by: satan, metal and leather

Re: 5150/6505

It can do 'softer' Hard Rock sounds through the green channel.
With careful use of gain and everything, it gives a very open, responsive crunch.

The red channel is pure mayhem.
I didn't like both the green or red channels for lead work all that much, it's a bit too grainy.
And the clean channel is utterly sterile and dead sounding. Terrible.

Maybe some tube swaps give the cleans some life, but stock? Wow it's useless.

Re: 5150/6505

i play an original 5150 head a hell of a lot... i use it thru a high powered 1x12... pretty much has been my main hard rock rig for over 12 years now... love the 2 channels and love the foot switchable FX, comes in handy... my current rock rig is the 5150, 1x12, a Wolfgang, a MXR Flanger, and a Delay... it is killer

i've toyed with the idea of getting a new 6505 head... i remember lots of people thinking the 6505 sounds better then a 6505plus... not sure why... just a heads up, you may want to test both out..

Re: 5150/6505

i will add that when in a band that i used my 5150 with the 5150 cab i had the cops show up a lot... even had some lawyer threaten to sue us once as we did an outdoor show and he said it was disturbing his law office down the street... thats when i started using the 1x12 and turning the volumes down.... and started using lower wattage amps more often

Re: 5150/6505

So is the green channel best for KISS? I do play other stuff, but I especially love KISS. Ace Frehley Did use a 5150 in the late 90s.

I had the 5150 II combo for a decade I guess and lost it in a fire :( I loved that thing and yeah, it caused me a little trouble here and there too. I'd guess that realistically it had more ooomph than the Spider IV 150w I have sitting upstairs now. There's just no comparison. -Rod-

for sure i'd miss my 5150 if i lost it... my back up for it is a TSL100 Marshall i snagged for cheap from a pawn shop... it's ok but not the same... oneday i may get a 6505 head, but for now i'm concentrating on lower wattage combos and pedalboards...

Re: 5150/6505

Honestly I love my 6505+ combo, I used to hate everything Peavey came out with but I really like these amps......

Re: 5150/6505

The 5150 (early block model) that I had is one I wish I had back. Just an awesome amp. Yes, the preamp is based of the SLO design. Coincidence that I use the Soldano model in my Vox Valvetronix? Surely not...lol. The only thing I didn't like about the 5150 was the weight. One heavy SOB.

85 pounds if my back remembers correctly :)) I built a 4 wheeled dolly for it and it sat on it for 8 or 9 years at least. There were lots of them up on ebay for me to choose from but most had taken too much of a beating for my taste. My cats would trash a couch in months but never once touched an amp or guitar. Other people's pets didn't seem to be so considerate of their owners' gear I guess. In the end I picked up an HT-40. It's great but not a 5150. -Rod-

Funny because the channel on my valvetronix that I use a lot is based on the 5150. If I bought a Vypyr (tube of course) could I get a good recreation or should I invest in a real 6505+.

Yeah, that sounds about right for the weight. I didn't have anything with wheels at the time. Now that I have my Marshall, I don't really need a 5150 but it would be nice anyway just for kicks.

Which Valvetronix amp are you using? One of the newer VT models?

I don't know how the modeling of the 6505+ is in the Vypers, but if you want one, scour the ads for one.

a 5150 would be cool fo sho, but i think both guitarists in kiss were using Marshall JCM 900 SL-x in the late 90s fwiw

I thought that too but supposedly on the Psycho Circus tour Ace Frehley liked the tone of the 5150s so he got them and used the marshalls for show. Of course the peavy heads were going into marshall cabs. From what I can tell Paul was using the SL-Xs for a while untill he got a signature randall amp.

Re: 5150/6505

the guys in Kiss have used a ton of different amps... a more current tour was romoured to of been done direct to the PA with some sort of POD set up, with no amps on stage being used.. who knows...

but a 5150/6505 will do the standard Kiss rock sounds really well... it has a great hard rock crunch perfect for that....

what model of 6505 are you looking at.. combo, head? what will your use be for it? bedroom, band... my 5150 head sits under a dust cover too much since i only play a few shows a year that i can use it at... it's kind of heavy to hual to practices and jam sessions... well worth the effort as it sopunds killer but i end up carrying a Peavey C30 combo more often to practices and jams...

i never use the 5150 at home really.... at home i use small practice amps....

Re: 5150/6505

I'm looking at the 6505+ head and pair it up with a Peavey cab, I'm thinking I could get a celestion EVH speaker and install that. I want an amp that I can have for years that I can gig with and be a bedroom. An attentuator might help with the volume. Weight is not an issue. I think I might want a peavey vypyr tube 120 if the recreations sound accurate to the real amps.

Even with an attenuator it will never really be a bedroom amp. Theres a ton of amps that will do Kiss style crunch at lower volumes. Why hassle with the weight and an attenuator especially lately the small tube amp market has really opened up.
