I prefer to point the mic perpendicular to the grillcloth... it always sounds better that way to me. I do, however, want to try out some multiple micing combos; the Fredman technique, micing different speakers at the same time, adding a condensor in the back, using a D112... If only I had more money.


I know what you mean about it being loose; it also has some low mid rumble that I'm going to tighten up. I wasn't as generous as usual with my low-mid comression on this clip, but now I realize I need to do that, turn down the gain a bit, and turn down the resonance.

Oh yeah. Multiple mics is great. One set like you do, another set like my diagram on another and then a 3rd about 20 feet away for some natural ambience. Sounds killer when dialed in and mixed just right. Good luck with that and the best tool is your ears. You're doing a good job with them so far.

Erik, what do you mean the script model? The 5150 logo looks like block lettering... I guess I'm not clear on which part of the logo is different?

Look at the EVH initials on the right side of the face plate. The first runs where script letters, then they changed a few years later to block letters. Just like the Phase 90's. Go figure.

No problem. I just looked at it again and the script is actually his signature. The block is just "EVH". :blackeye: I shoulda remembered that since I used to own one. But, that was around 10 years ago too.

I would advise against using a D112 and just try the other mic techniques you mentioned. Unless you want gobs of low end, reduced mids, and high treble response. There's a reason its a kick/bass guitar mic.

Ah ok. I'll keep that in mind!

There is no tonal difference between the EVH Blockletterheads and the script logo's, though. Keep that in mind, yourselves! Any tonal differences are caused by the fact that Peavey shipped the amps with different brand tubes.


Just updated it with an improved gat tone, and now it has bass.
