I cant seem to find on peaveys site what the watts are for the combos speakers. Does anyone know, and what would be a good replacement? I have looked at the back of my speakers but they only list the ohms. Thanks.

Re: 5150 combo speakers

Nice amp! Am I wrong, or did your combo come with Peavey Sheffield 12" speakers? If they're like the speakers in my 112SX cabs, they are rated at 75 watts each. As far as replacements you might check out the Eminence Readcoat series. Even though I basically liked the Sheffields, they could sometimes sound a bit shrill and sterile with my Mesa MK III (which some reviewers have described as sounding "constipated" anyway). I've replaced them with Governors which have more lower-mid "meat" and are a little less crisp...I guess the tone quest never ends...

Re: 5150 combo speakers

Yes they are the sheffield speakers. I agree that they are sometimes bright. It depends on which guitar I am using. My wolfgang can get bright but my paduk strat is not. I was considering some celestions but needed to know which wattage to buy. Thanks

Re: 5150 combo speakers

I personally do not like that combination, but I don't like combining speakers. (It changes the mic'd tone in a way I don't like, and I really, really love V30's.

It doesn't matter what you replace them with, wattage wise, as long as the combined wattage of the speakers you're putting in can handle the 60W being pushed out by the amp.

That said, I've never heard a better speaker for a 5150 than a V30... Here's a clip of what mine sounds like:

If you don't know the wattage of the original speakers, you can narrow down your selection of replacements by comparing how many watts the amp puts out. I am a fan of Eminence speakers, so for an amp like that, I would consider Governors or Legends.

Re: 5150 combo speakers

1 v30 and 1 g12t75, believe me i've tried alot of speakers with my various 5150 heads

Good combination. The 75 has the bass and pulled back mids with a little sizzle on top and the v30 has the boosted mids and high end cut. Mic them both when you record and mix the sounds...perfect
