5150 III advice

Re: 5150 III advice

Alright, I think I'm gonna have to save up for the 50w, especially after listening to some comparison videos. I know I said Panama was gonna be my cabinet, but does anyone have other recommendations? I'm also looking at the Marshall MX212 and the matching EVH cab. The panama has the attenuator, but I'm leary of it as I've heard mixed reviews. The Marshall looks the most attractive because it's 8 ohms and 160w. The EVH sounds great in my experience, but it's 16 ohm and 60w, which would choke the amp a bit right?

I would choose the EVH cab over the Marshall MX anyday, the EVH is 7-ply birch with G12M speakers and the Marshall is mdf with 70/80 speakers, pretty much no contest on either spec. Actually, I wouldn't even consider that Marshall cab, I'm not a fan of the 70/80s or mdf. For the same money as the MX you could get a nice 1-12 Avatar cabinet with a real speaker and made of real wood, not to mention a 1-12 will be easier to carry around since you probably will be doing that quite a bit living in a dorm.

Re: 5150 III advice

I'd go with the 50 watt if it was me. 6L6s, big transformers, emulated line out, midi capable , a real clean channel if needed.....It has a master volume and the amp can sound good at whisper volume. It is just a lot more amp for making a major long term investment.

For dorm room practice and portability get a Roland micro cube or a Yamaha modeler or something like that in addition.

ok, I agree with this. I have both the LBX and the 50 combo. if you intend to play at collage the 50 has a built in attenuater that will allow you to play it at low volumes but still sound like its at full blast. i would get the single speaker combo 1x12 as you can always add an extension speaker to it later.
this will create a couple of advantages
1)- you can play it for practice at any level or use it in a band...so its extremely versatile
2)-its not as heavy as the 2x12 combo and you can always expand to an extension speaker if you want extra speakers. It has several impedence options on the back so expansion is a snap.
3)-headphone jack yup its got one......weird until you realize its actually kinda cool.
4)-the clean on it is not fantastic but a cheapo used Fender Champ xd2 amp will give you all the dorm room clean you want if you want cheap Fender clean tone plus at low practice volume the EVH can stay clean
5)-you can always send the amp to Kruse Kustom Amps to have it modded into a brutal scream machine so mods are available for this amp.

I have the LBX. wile I love the low weight I dont think it would work well for a Jam amp or gig amp cuz its only 15 watts and around 14 to 15 watts it will start to sound thin and mushy cuz your maxing the amp at that level. if your not jamming with a band and weight is an issue then the LBX is a great option plus its great tone at a cheaper price and it too can be modded should you want to hot rod it by Kruse Kustom amps.
I like both, I have both except my combo is the 2x12 evh. I love this amp but it is heavy and I use a dolly to haul it that I bought at costco for 80 bucks that turns into a cart. Its really your thing. I love both my amps. no wrong choices here just what will work best for your situation.

Re: 5150 III advice

You start getting the tone as soon as you start turning up the volume from the lowest.I use mine at home even at night and it sounds awesome at any volume..I love mine !

Re: 5150 III advice

Not really. From my understanding, the head needs to be "under a load", so the head needs to be cabbed up.
Hopefully I said this right, I tend to talk potato-head.
Howard Kaplan is the main Engineer on the 50 watters and he is a member of The Gear Page and he answers all questions about the EVH series of amps, and I asked him about the headphone jack and if a cabinet/load had to be hooked up/plugged in when using the headphone jack and he replied "NO"..straight from the man himself..he is cool and answers all questions !
