5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

First,
How are the 5150 III amps in general?? It seems like there are not alot of guys talking about them, so I didnt know if that should be a warning sign..???

Next, most importantly, how close does that amp get to the Peavey's tone? I love that thick gooey tone the Peavys put out.

Also, I understand that the 50 watter shares eq between channels, but how else does it differ from the 100 watt one? Anyone who has played both, does the tone differ much between them? Ive played amps with a half power switches and can tell 50 vs 100, so I expect that there would be a little less beef, but any other differences??

I saw one of the small mesa Recto Jrs today and believe id like the 5150 III better, but no place round me has em..
Thanks!

I absolutely love mine.

I briefly played a Peavey, which I liked, though it sounded a bit darker and muffled than the EVH.

The EVH is hands down MUCH quieter at high gain than the Peavy.

Many have said the EVH is more refined with a little less gain, but better quality gain.

The EVH takes pedals extremely well, it loves some delay or reverb in the effects loop.

The EVH does the fender/ Marshall/ Soldano thing very well. The Peavy excels at the heavy saturation that extreme metal players may prefer.

Also- you haven't heard many people talk about them because they just aren't in the stores. They were being built in Vietnam, but it was taking too long to ship them to supply demand, so they recently switched manufacturing to Mexico. Even then they are being pre ordered months in advance, and demand is so great they're still back ordered

I did not realize that EVH III were not MIA .... wow ... Is EL34 version a special order ?
Thanks.

Re: 5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

It's likely my next amp and I keep hearing good things about it. Early on some were getting quality issues, but lately I'm not heairng much on that.

The biggest gripe I keep hearing is the volume difference between clean and gain channels. I don't play much clean and will be more often driving the clean channel with pedals, which I can balance against the gain channels, but in those cases where I'm using a low gain setting TS type pedal on the clean channel and want to change to the gain 2 channel with the pedal still on (to thicken up the channel 2 and tighten bass), I'm guessing the volume chnage still applies, which would bug me. I hear there's an easy mod for this, which I'll definitely do if I get the amp.

Most of the you tube demos sound good to me and consistent enough to base a decision on. Can't find one at GC to demo.

Lol...if I lived there. hey thanks though. When I'm ready I do plan to order it online and return it to the store if I don't like it. Maybe they're like that with everyone, but my local GC is really good about returns with me. Maybe it's because of all the revenue I've provided them the past 12 years.

Just waiting to see what taxes and my forever shrinking bonus will be like next year. For the first time ever, I bought zero gear this year (not counting picks and strings). And I'm down to one axe. Man I hope next year isn't the same.

Re: 5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

I 'liked' the 5150III that I played, but it didn't blow my skirt up by any means. Refined more tuned 5150 is about right, but I favor the quirks of the original.

They're cool, but to me a good rodded 800 feels and sounds better if you know how to use the volume knob.

5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

The amp is not available in EL34, only 6L6, but does the Marshall vibe very well.

My Marshall JCM 800 did seem to have a much larger ballsier tone, but the 100 watts had to be cranked to be appreciated, which for me was impractical, and I wasn't happy with attenuators. Also, adding boosters to increase gain made the amp very noisy, with the 5150 III I can get way more gain with no hooters and nowhere near the noise. That's what sold the amp for me.

If I was able to really crank a 50 or 100 water I'd be looking to Splawn, not Marshall

The new Splawns allow you to use the effects loop control as a master volume.. Thats the only way I can enjoy mine.. My Jcm 800 def has to be cranked to sound good.

Re: 5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

Does this have a master vol on it?? I was loving the HK tubemiester 36 as it has the red box and the switches to down power it and all.. I was thinking it was going to be a good bit cheaper than the 5150, but no, appears they are in the same ball park.. gonna be hard to chose that over this one..but I need something I can play a lower volumes

What Splawn are you playing thru? I've got the 22 watt Super Sport head and I couldn't get a good tone using the volume loop master , It sounded a lot better using the master volume. I'm using the Ultimate Attenuator with it now and it sounds really good at tolerable volumes in the house.

5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

Hahaha, sorry for the off-topicness, but did no one else catch that hilarious typo? :D

I'm reading that and I can't even explain what I meant, I must have been txting and posting at the same time.

The 5150 III is great for low volumes, which is a big reason I got it. If you crank the resonance control on the back the cabs sound much larger, my 2 1x12 cabs sound like a 4x12.

If someone was predominantly playing live I'd suggest the added headroom of the 100 watt.

Re: 5150 III (fiddy watt) questions

Bro a Supro MOFO from Bruce Zinky is not much more $$ and has a lifetime warranty is made in the USA and has tones to DIE for. I would take a Zinky Velvet or a MOFO any day over the 5150 III.
My little 25 watt Zinky Blue Velvet combo live in a HUGE lobby of an old hospital unmiced and running nothing but a delay and a Wah.

The EVHIII isn't made in America? What the ****? That's heresy. No way would I consider one of those knowing that. . .I'm more into the Randall Satan amp coming out soon since I already have a 5150 combo.

The 100 watt and 50 watt are now both made in Mexico
