5150 or an early 70's Orange OR120 ?

Re: 5150 or an early 70's Orange OR120 ?

As someone who listens to more 70s punk than anybody -and engineered a lot of 90s doom -I disagree -as the holy grail -I mean.

it's a very good amp -but it's not the best for either IMO.

Just for interest sake . . .what would you say are the proverbial holy grail amps for this genre ?

Johnny Thunders, BORIS, and the first few High On Fire albums might beg to differ but yknow what opinions are like :smokin:

When I think "'90s doom", I'm thinking Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Anathema, Skepticism, or Thergothon before any of those; the "Master of Reality"-worship stoner stuff didn't really become popular until the 2000s (of your examples, High on Fire didn't even put an album out until 2000).

Re: 5150 or an early 70's Orange OR120 ?

Yeah good point. I spent the early oughts pretending it was still 1998 so my dates get a little blurry.

All great -You have good taste my friend. So I won't argue!

But High on Fire barely qualifies as 90s Doom -as they more define the next decade IMO

for 90s -Sleep (-of course) -Harvey Milk, Melvin's, Floor are quintessential 90s Stoner/Sludge Doom.

Punk or Doom?

I'd say neither have a proverbial one -so many varied tones inside of those Genres' and amps that were used more often

-just saying the OR120 is not it -if there is one.

If I had to say well....

The JMPs, Ampeg V4s, and Hiwatts are all over 70s punk

and for 90s doom -JCMs, Laney's, Sunns and Ampegs are all over those records.

Re: 5150 or an early 70's Orange OR120 ?

I have never heard of any of these bands.
Just looked up Sleep on YT. I listened the Dragonaut.bery Sabbath-y.
How was this not at all on my radar?

Duno, man. I've been name-dropping those guys on this forum since 2004 at least hahaha

You're totally right but the custom Green amps Sleep used were basically OR120 clones so I stand by my opinions :smokin:

Clearly I’m a little slow on the uptake.
I’m an 80’s child...when the 90’s thing hit, I hated it. I fully admit I became absolutely close minded toward a lot of what was coming out then.
Of course now I realize that I missed out on a crap load of good music because of my own doing...

Re: 5150 or an early 70's Orange OR120 ?

I totally understand.
My location, like you've mentioned is a huge pain in the arse though :(
I have NEVER seen a master volume Orange (vintage 70's or even the early 90's) for sale in this country, nor have i ever heard of any one owning one.
Hell, i a the only person i know who owns a Laney AOR over here.

Aren't you in SA?

I'm a little older so -those bands i listed were super important back then to me.
