I didn't have any homework today (:banana: ), so I decided to do a test and see which speaker sounds the best in it - huge difference! I also decided to test out some different settings while I was doing this, just for reference.

http://witheringaway.googlepages.com/Speakerstest.zip

1-3 = Top Left
4-6 = Top Right
7 = Bottom Left
8 = Bottom Right

Because I used different settings for the top two (which sounded the best), the setting is in clips 2, 5, 7, and 8.

I'm leaning towards the top right speaker, I'll have to test it out some more when DFHS gets running on Intels, and then I'll actually be able to test it in a mix.

The settings vary between 1-3 and 4-6... 1 uses the same setting as 4, 2 = 5, and 3 = 6. The three I used were Andy's from the ilovemetal.co.uk site, a set I got from Ken Sorceron (Abigail Williams), and a set I got from egan. (Daylight Dies settings) - see if you can guess which is which! Kinda lame, I know, but I'm bored.

2 and 5 have gotta be the andy sneap settings ;).

My guess is that 3 and 6 are from daylight dies

And I'm not all too familiar with the other one, but process of elimination goes to 1 and 4.

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

No clue which is which, but I like the sound of 7 & 8 the best. Not sure which I prefer of those two...maybe 7.

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

I find 7 and 8 both to be hollow and harsh - don't think they'd work well in a mix at all.

5 has been owning, but I screwed on on 4 and 6 and left out a stereo side somehow. :( I didn't save it, but I still think that speaker sounds best.

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

Thanks guys! I fixed up 4 and 6 (I only recorded one track on left and right sides, respectively, so it screwed with the tone and feel of it).

When corrected, I found my favorite tone so far! Daylight Dies settings, top right speaker.

Yup, single 57 on a V30 - all of those are V30's. The top two were from a Mesa cab, bottom two were stock (Celestion has 3 different voicings of V30's - one for Mesa, one for Marshall, one for everything else.)

I need to get another mic, and blend them, though.

Sounds cool, I'll check it out when I get home from school, I just had to know which speakers it was since I just ordered a Framus cab with v30's a couple of days ago, and I needed to know what they're like for metal, it was a bit of a gamble to buy a cab without knowing too much, I guess, but I heard good stuff about it, so I might get surprised in a very positive way.

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

V30's are the standard for metal ;).

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

It sounds really good, can't really decide which clip I like most though :(

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

5, try layering it with 7 a little quieter.. One of each on each side, should sound good and fill it out, though you'll probably have to tweak a bit.

I've been experimenting with that myself atm - layering a bright/more cutting tone louder on top of a slightly quieter darker/bassier tone... Seems to work ok, but I've used it more for chuggy stuff as opposed to technical/gallopy stuff :)

Re: 5150 - Speakers and Settings Test

Got sick of these (sounding kind of phasey and meh), so I tried out some other settings/mic placement today... not even sure if I like these new ones:

TBH I'm getting a bit sick of the 707 - it seems to woof/honk up the low mids and suck the highs out. The 81 sounds far better recorded from what I've heard, so I'm going to snag one to stick in the bridge when I find one used for sale.
