5150 troubleshooting mystery

I have a 5150 head plugged in the speakers of my tsl602. When i got the amp Yesterday, It would turn on and power up and everything. Then when i would take it off standby, it would give me a humming noise and a very quiet guitar tone. When i raised the gain it would act accordingly but when i raised the main volume it wouldnt get any louder. It would just give it more more highend. Then after trying the amp again and again, it worked. I was so happy. I could tell right away that it worked when i took it off standby and it didnt make any noise at zero volume. then when i raised the main volume slightly, it crackled (its an old one) and gave me the crushing sound i was looking for. I was delighted. But when i came back later to play it again, The same problem happened. I can change channels, but the eq doesnt do anything. the master volume doesnt make it louder, it just adds highend. the resonence and presence do work properly btw. also there seems to be buzzing coming from inside the amp itself. I know its not the speakers becuase they are rated 80 watts\8 ohms each and they worked fine with the tsl after the problem. I also tried wiggling the cords in their jacks to see if the problem would cut in and out but i cant get it to.

HELP ME, SOMEBODY HELP ME!

Re: 5150 troubleshooting mystery

I was thinking failing output transformer.
But could it be as simple as a dirty speaker jack or maybe a dirty volume pot?

a buddy of mine has a well used 5150 stack at his studio... the pots are all scratchy now and you have to play with the knobs as they sometimes short out... pain... it is in need of service big time.... thank god my 5150 is in better shape then his... but oddly his sound better then mine... i'm still waiting to get some better tubes for mine...
