Hey Y'all,

I took advantage of the Barden craze & sold the T-set outta my '52 RI for a pretty penny. Very pretty. ;) Ya' know I think the stock pups (included in original purchase) aren't all that bad, but you know how it goes. , I need some better tone. Whatta y'all suggest. Antiquities of course, were first in my mind. But please tell me your favourites & why. Thanks.

Peace,

Darrin

Hey Darrin! My favorites are the custom set MJ wound for me: Tele ala Strat neck and Hot Tapped Tele. Why? Because the alnico 5 neck pickup sounds alot like a nice Strat pickup and alnico 2 bridge pickup sounds alot like my other two favorite Tele pickups: Antiquity and Jerry Donahue.

With a 5 way switch I can get:

6.5K bridge
6.5K bridge and neck
neck
10K bridge and neck
10K bridge

Really cool!

well i have to say antiquities aside, my voodoo pickups are killer. nice and hot, have a good bite to them.

what kind of tone are you going for? i am guessing you are a lot like me taste wise and stay pretty traditional with your pickups. I can't recommend the antiquities enough but other pickups i think would sound very good in that guitar are of course fralins bs or stock set, the above mentioned voodoo te50's, an old broadcaster (8.2k) range and a 54 neck pickup. If you like your tele pickups staggared you might want to try the antiquity II series tele pickups.

Those are all of my ideas for now. i can explain any one more if you like. also someone revived the ultimate tele tone thread. I am sure there are some good ideas in there too.

Good Luck Darrin

Thanks Scott! I have the stock pups back in there right now. In a momentary lapse of reason, I didn't meter the stock pups. Any idea what their dc resistance is & how they compare to the Duncs you mentioned?

Peace,

Darrin

Darrin,
I have a similar set here:
SWD Custom
mine has a different neck than Lew's

I think that both Seymour and Evan have a similar set too.

Tell me about your set up, G. You know what I'm playing through. I was playing a little "Lenny" today with the Tele thru the Blues Jr. (both neck & neck/mid on a 3way) & I want a little more Strat in the neck. Is yours &, or Lews setup what I need. I love the feel of this '52 RI, the neck is so easy for me to navigate (My only maple neck guitar). Might need to pick up a maple neck for one of my Strats. :smack:

I'm kinda proud of this thread and the way it evolved and I really learned alot during the months this thread evolved. I discovered the Jerry Donahue lead pickup (thanks to Dr Barlo I think) and the Antiquitys about 1/2 way through it and they are now some of my very favorite Tele pickups...I'd been searching for that tone for about 30 years, and the Antiquitys as well as the JD really remind me of the tone of that particular guitar. I also learned that if a Tele neck pickup is strong enough to sound great by itself (like the Fralin Blues Special neck pickup) that when I combine it with the bridge pickup I lose some of the chimey N&B rythym tone I love...that was a real revelation for me and caused me to reconsider everything and go back to using a nickel covered neck pickup again. I kinda started off thinking I knew alot about Teles and then ended up realizing how much I really didn't know after all!

Darrin,
sorry, man, I haven't used that set yet - I just thought you might want to see the specs ..
however, somewhere in that ultimate tele thread, Lew said the set he has is one of his favorites.

Hey man, I also have a set of these tapped CS Duncans...the bridge is not as hot (mines right around 6.25/8.75) but it is a killer set. I find myself using the vintage tap if the bridge with the neck(it just blends together beautifully) alot and even the neck alone quite a bit and then for leads I have the hotter bridge sound that really is great! I tried a few things in this Tele and this is the best!

Ditto. I have some of the stock Tapped Tele Hot bridge pickups in stock...but the set I use I ordered from MJ. I guess after talking to me she decided I'd like the 10K output because that's what she wound for me. I think she'd wind you whatever you ask for as long as it's doable. I'm going to guess she wound mine at 10K because I told her how much I like the 10K Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup. I use that one in my Strat with the Antiquity Surfers for the neck and middle.

I can see that...I talked with MJ 3 times before we decided what she was gonna wind, after the third conversation she told me that these would be great I told her that I wanted a little thicker tone from the tap but not an extreme change, she said thats the same thing Jeff Beck told Seymour years ago, so I wound up with the 53 tapped JB set. I'll say this MJ knows her stuff and she really knows how to take the crazy terms we use to describe tone and make it happen!

Re: '52 RI pups, replace with? Lew,Curly,Scott,Butch .....

okay spec wise i am not positive about the set you have in there right now darrin, but i think it is somewhere around 7.2 and 7.7 for the neck with alnico 5 magnets.

My voodoos are about 10k at the bridge and 9k for the neck, with alnico 5's
much thicker and darker than the fenders, but with a great top end bite.

fralins are a closer comparison but i forget the dc resistance, but they are both pretty close. i think the BS bridge is wound to about 7.5k and the neck to 7k, but the neck is uncovered so it should be more strat like.

I don't think i need to give you another review of the antiquities. they are just amazing, smooth but also twangy.

I don't know too much about the CS set that lew or curly has, but they seem like a great sets.

Scott
