57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

I need a new LP of some sort for some WLH's

And yeah - 57's are just not taking you to VHII even with a bunch of junk in between pup and amp. And there is no problem with your amps.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

Was the bridge pickup of the WLH set bright? I'm reading some reviews that are saying that.

I've also been considering some other options. What are your thoughts?

SD Pearly Gates set
SD Custom/59 set
Sheptone Tribute or Heartbreaker set
IronGear Rolling Mill set
Dimarzio 36th Anniversary set

WLH bridge is absolutely not "bright". They are roughcast A5 pickups and are perfectly sweet on the top end. They sound like Pearly Gates/classic rock "Les Paul" sound *after* being recorded and produced on a famous record.

+1 I have a very dark low mid tone with the WLHs, very deep. I would call the 57 a much brighter pickup.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

Before you go and yank yer pickups out for some new ones, a couple dollars could get you an A4 for the neck and a UOA5 for the bridge. This will make the pickups on par with SD or DMZ offerings. What most people don't know is that Gibson pickups are high quality, they just ship them out with the wrong magnets for some reason. I have this set in my ES-175 Special (The Epi one) and it rivals just about any hollowbody I've ever put it up against. It excels at anything from clean to mild overdrive, and everything above classic rock levels it will do pretty well, not as good as, say Blackouts, but it'll do it.
Ok, I just ordered an A4 and a UOA5 magnet from ebay. What do I need to do to swap the magnets? Do they need to go into the pickup a certain way to retain polarity?

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

Hi ledvedder, just wanted to say that I just put the 57 classic plus in my PRS SE Custom 22. Not really a Les paul but close enough.
First impression is that its a very warm pickup with nice clean tone, with a bit of crunch it has a nice growl but can sound a bit dark. I raised the pickup quite a bit to balance out volume wise with the Jazz2N. On the high gain channel I find it has a nice gnarly character but can sound a bit darkish. It's lower output than I am used to (I got 8K on the multimeter) but it takes pedals well and is touch sensitive and has a nice thump, not so much sparkle yet but I need to see how it is when played louder.
I have to do more tests as I obviously just have the pickup installed and playing a bit on low volume but compared to my other guitars I had to turn up the mids and treble a bit on the amp to get it sounding nice.
I think might be on the right track with the UOA5 magnet, I see myself put it in in the future to see how that's like.
Good luck, and I'll post some more of my findings once I am more familiar with this pickup. So far I'm not disappointed, it sounds pretty good to me.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

Well, I tried to like the 57s, but I just couldn't find the tone I had in my head. I put a JB/59 set in. The 59 neck sounds closer to what I'd like in the neck. I may try an A4 or A2 magnet in it. The JB was too high output and too much upper mids for me. I thought about grabbing a 59 for the bridge, but was afraid it would be more of the same that I got with the 57 Classic Plus. I just grabbed a Custom to try in the bridge.

Werd.....how are the new pickups?

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

I still wasn't happy with the JB even after the magnet swaps. I got the Custom, but haven't had a chance to install it yet.

It's hard to beat the Custom wind for versatility with magnets and woods.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

I do like the Custom wind myself for the same reasons! ^^^ Seems a good choice for the styles the OP wants to play. I have used the Custom 5 extensively, and I'd like to try the A2 and ceramic versions.

I do really dig the Classic 57/Classic 57 plus pair in my newer SG, I was surprised to do so, actually. I can understand why someone might not like them for heavier music. I'm doing classic rock and blues through a JTM 45 clone, with is fairly laid back compared to heavier styles.

Mmhmm I reckon.

Like I was saying, the SD Custom family shares "DNA" with those EVH Wolfgang & EVH Frankenstein pickups that you dig.

The output is 100% Ed, for one.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

Finally had a chance to install the Custom tonight. Wow this thing is bassy! I'll have to play around with it for a while to see if I can get it dialed in right.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

I took Lt Kojack's advise and put a a8 in the 57+ bridge and a5 in the 57 neck and I got a set I like better than the:
Aph1 set
57/57+ set
57/57+ with ceramic 8 magnets in both
APH1 set with a5 in the neck
APH1n/59n hybrid with a5
These were in my 2016 Gibson nr firebird which has very apparent woody tone that I could only escape with higher output mags/pickups.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

I actually like the Classic 57s on my 2010 LP Traditional. With my amp and effects I can do clean and Death Metal with no issues. It's my only guitar without SDs, and I don't see a swap for many, many years. Nailed the LP sounds I always wanted to get out of a guitar.

Re: 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus opinions for hard rock?

The Les Paul Traditional that I owned (about 5 years ago) had 300kOhm volume pots (and tone pots, I believe). I found the 57/57+ sounding a litlle bland with the stock electronics and replaced the volume pots with 500k ones. That gave me a little more attack and punch. Might be worth a try?

Maybe the guitar is a dog
