57 classic vs whole lotta humbucker bridge

Who has experience with both? I have a WLH on order coming in tomorrow, will the WLH make my 335 sound a bit more like an LP? (bit more aggressive, in your face, PAF tone);

More aggressive a bit yes...more like a LP? not so much.

The bigger difference will be more that the WLH's wont sound as wooly the 57's and at the same time will be warmer and clearer with more attitude.

Yes... big difference between the two. My run ins with the '57 Classic were fairly disappointing compared to the WLH set.

with distortion, my 335 and LP already sound somewhat alike, with the 335 being a little bit more mushy with power chords, I felt an A5 bridge would help "bridge" the gap

+1. In my experience, there's always a better PAF than '57's, especially at retail aftermarket prices.

See my 335 JB/Jazz thread (Pickup Report)

57 classics vs WLH? I've never played WLH's and know that they are total win in there.

I just find the 57 classics meh in every way. I have read some guys dig the %& Plus, but I have no experience with those.

Re: 57 classic vs whole lotta humbucker bridge

I took the 57s out of my Les Paul Traditional and replaced them with WLHs. They diffrence was like night and day. Better finger response, more growl and a lot thicker tone.

Re: 57 classic vs whole lotta humbucker bridge

Accurate description. And why settle for 'meh' when there's so many other great ones available? Seymour has a passion for PAF's.

Heck - GIBSON makes a bunch of better ones!

True, BB's sound much better with their wind and unbalanced coils, & Gibson's gotten a creative spurt recently with several good new PAF's (after a long lull). I don't why they've stuck '57's in most of their guitar models at some point or another. Maybe they have a warehouse full of them to use up.

yeah i actually think i prefer the BB Pro neck in my Lp versus the seth lover neck in my 335, it has a bit more bite and is clearer with gain than the seth lover.

Does Duncan have any unbalanced coil A5 neck pu's like the BB pro neck?

Re: 57 classic vs whole lotta humbucker bridge

^ Gibson says the BB's are unbalanced, but Zhangbucker has measured a lot of different BB pickups and found generally the same difference you'd find with a hundered or so turns, and the K reading difference you typically might get with coils that are actually supposed to be balanced. In short, too small for the tone to be due to the unbalanced wind.

Duncan doesn't do any unbalanced coil pickups apart from in the Custom shop AFAIK. But the wind is much more important for tone/clarity than an offset. Or it is perhaps more easy to get good predictable results with the wind giving the clarity.

Its funny, the BB pro is more often called thin and raspy - it all depends on your ear, rig and target tone......and a bit of what you have gotten used to beforehand.

Edit - You know, I did have a sense of Deja Vu typing this.......same op, same question.....same response

Yeah - we have had a few discussions about unbalanced coils. Duncan staff have pointed out that they need to be REALLY unbalanced before you even notice.

Still, whatever the issue….

BB1, 2, 3, even Pros (I'm not a fan) are better to my ears than a 57 classic.

I would go with a set of SD Seth Lovers (sh-55) these pickups smoke on a hollowbody

I was interested in trying the BB Pros when I got my explorer and couldn't wait to yank them out after plugging it in. That guitar did not work at all with the same settings as my other guitars. Now that it has a OG Diablo and old jazz in the neck, it sounds outstanding.

As for the original question, I really like the BB3 and it sounds great in the new Dave Grohl model.
