'59 a little bassy in the neck

Re: '59 a little bassy in the neck

The Jazz is my favorite neck humbucker and it is definitely more articulate and less boomy than the 59.

A few things you could try before buying a new pickup:

1. Are you using 500k pots with a .015uf or lower capacitor with the 59 pickup?
2. Did you try backing the 59 pickup away from the strings a bit? (specifically on the bass side?)

If neither of those two things solve your problem then you would definitely love a Jazz in the neck. I have been using a Jazz for a while now and I love it. I used to have the 59 myself and switching to the Jazz made a huge difference for me.

My first thought was, "Have you tried tweaking the height?". I have '59s in the neck of both my 335 and Les Paul (with 500K pots & .015uf Orange Drops) and they were a bit boomy when run too close to the strings.I'm also a huge fan of the Jazz model in the neck, but it's a more modern sound than a '59.

I've got .022 oil/paper with 500K's. I'll try lowering the pup as that could well be the solution.....I honestly should've thought of it as I've just received some Dragon II's and all the reviews state to lower those as well. Thx!

Nothing is more boomy than the 59 neck. Going with 250 Kohm pots itstead of 500 will only remove treble. I don't see how that un-booms it.

Does the guitar have a tremolo or is it PRS'es hardtail?

If you aren't opposed to swapping magnets, BrianS. has a good suggestion. I love what the A4 has done for the 2 '59s I have in my guitars (Yamaha SL-700 & Yamaha SG-1000). It still has a good amount of bass, but a lot more balanced that isn't overwhelming in the neck position. Cleans still sound great and it performs fantastic under gain.

"I have never seen anybody say "59s in the neck of a Les Paul are boomy", unconditionally. Never. Stop riding that BS, Blueman. You keep messing up perfectly fine threads arguing against things nobody said in the first place." uOpt 1-29-15

I don't understand how the same person can say these things with two weeks of each other. Could you clarify?

Re: '59 a little bassy in the neck

The pup can't be lowered any more than it is, so I'll either run an additional cap between the '59 and the hot wire OR decide between the Jazz or PG (I'm also leaning towards a set of Godwoods as well).
