59' and Jazz

Would you be able to pull off metal with a 59' neck and jazz bridge im wondering cuz i just switched from a screamin demon which i did not like and distortion trem which i did like but please help me to see if this 59 jazz combination is alright

59 neck is ok but you might want something else for the bridge.

Children, what kind of guitar is it going in? What kind of amp are you going into? Most metal guys what hotter pups.

With the right amp your choices would be fine, but the output of the jazz birdge, and 59 neck will be very close so you might want to get a set of one or the other. Jolly plays some heavy stuff with a set of jazzs. In the end go with your ears. Listen to the sound clips till your ears bleed, then do it some more! I've got an odd choice in my Heritage it's a jazz Alnico 2 Pro (b). If you get the set you are talking about make sure to have the jazz really close to the strings where you can get more output.

Slash's tone doesn't hold a candle to Alexi Laiho's for metal. :laugh2:

I say go with a JB/Jazz set. The 59 is overly bassy and boomy in the neck for metal and shred, but the Jazz is perfect. The JB is always a good starting point for metal, as well.

I'm thinking you'd be happiest with a Custom or C-5 bridge and 59 or Jazz neck.

Can anyone offer a comparison between a '59 and a Jazz in the neck position of a Les Paul? I am currently giving the Custom/'59 pair another try in my LP Standard, and am wondering how different the Jazz would be in the neck position.

Well I've tried them both in a mohogany/setneck/rosewood guitar, so I'll offer my views.

They are similar to my ears, with the 59 being more bassy and boomy, as well as sort of woofy on the low end. The Jazz has less lows and more high-mids, as well as treble, and an overall 'glassy' kind of feel to it.

My usual concern with the '59n in an LP is that it is slightly too bassy, which is why I generally prefer A2 neck pickups. I may try my spare Alnico II Pro neck with the Custom - though it seems a2 neck with ceramic bridge is an unusual pairing. A2P/CC is more normal, but who says you have to be normal? :laugh2:

If that's the concern you have, then a Jazz will be perfect for you. It's the same way I felt with the 59, and I'm sticking with the Jazz in place of it.


Now the JB in the neck, on the other hand...

COB: I tried the Screamin Deamon but found the JB much tighter for metal and speedy riffing. What are you playing through and what Guitar do you have? I have the JB/Jazz combo in several guitars made of Mahagony, Adler & Maple. They all sound great. Although I may consider something else for the Maple(?).

The Jazz is great in the neck. Like DeadSkinSlayer3 pointed out the JAzz has a nice High/Mid rage and cuts through the mix nicely.

okay im playing through a les paul into a randall ive heard that randalls are hard to get a good tone but ive found one and its good but i dunno i was gonna get an invader b and then jazz n but they didnt hav invader and i knew 59 was good pauls so even if i keep it then do u think i will be able to pull off metal im looking for just a nice metal tone ooo and also would i be able to pinch harmonic easily?

okay nvm im now gonna keep the 59 and then im gonna put a custom 5 in the bridge i feel like thatll be way better

amen - the jazz is very warm, but not overly bassy. awesome smooth solo tones, and i've started to coax some santana-ish stuff from my LP copy.. not that i can match him

couldn´t take the paf 59 either.its really beautiful for clean jazz and semi overdriven
blues tones.but forget it for metal and the likes...to mushy on the high strings and over bassy as someone here said as well.and that was on a very light bodied washburn!!! what really bothered me was it not having any mids what so ever.
im gonna skip the jazz and try the air norton.

That, for me, is a very good indicator of a well-balanced neck pickup. Santana's neck pickup tone is exemplary.

One thing I've noticed about Jazz's is that they're very glassy sounding and harder to the touch than most other A5 pickups. It's definitely overlooked as a bridge pickup and it's a good pickup for strat bridges! It's a tad bright, but the tight bottom is a real benefit.
I still like the C-5 better for most guitars, and especially higher gain.
