59 any good tapped?

It seems that every humbucking guitar sound I've liked lately has been old guitars - Pagey on How the West was Won (old LP), Johnny Marr on Boomslang (60's SG), Angus on If You Want Blood (another 60's SG). So, I've decided to try a pair of 59's as my first shot a tonal nirvana in my Schecter PT.

But... I can't remember the last time I had a bridge humbucker that wasn't tapped. So - is the 59N worth anything tapped? Seems a single coil would just be too wimpy, but who knows? If you know, please tell me.

I'll probably order the bridge p/u with the 4-conductor option anyway, so I can change the phase of the middle position. But tapping, I'm not sure about.

If the 59 set ends up not sounding balanced to my 80's ears, then I'll probaly switch to one of the Customs in the bridge position, and that will definitely be tapped.

Re: 59 any good tapped?

THe '59N sounds great tapped in my LP. A little less output, a little more jangly, and it's got a touch of what makes a neck single coil so great. Try it, you won't be dissapointed.

Re: 59 any good tapped?

I love how the 59n sounds in parrallel on my Schecter 006. Try it, I havn't tried the bridge model yet but it should be good.

Re: 59 any good tapped?

My 50 millionth plug for the Spin-A-Split mod and I'm sure folks are getting sick of it.

I think it would sound a little too thin split (as opposed to tapped -- which means more than one hot lead coming out of the same coil), but with this mod, you can get not only full humbucking and pure single coil, but everything in between. If you don't like the pure single sound, just roll the dial up a little until you do. Or if it's too fat or muddy, just roll it back...

What more could you ask for?

Re: 59 any good tapped?

Yeah, I'm guilty of getting us off in the wrong direction terminology-wise. I said tapped, but I meant split. I'm talking about SPLITTING a 59 bridge pickup - just using one coil. Worthwhile sound, or too wimpy?

Re: 59 any good tapped?

I would also like any info on this subject as well. I just ordered a 4-conductor 59B for the specific purpose of splitting. The sound of a 59B is so good, I'll still be happy if the split sounds aren't great.... but hopefully they are :)

Gentlemen, seriously -- try the Spin A Split.

I think I will. ;) I've got a guitar sitting here with a pair of 59's in it.

What value pot did you end up using with yours?

Re: 59 any good tapped?

If you split the bridge pickup, use the coil that's closer to the neck-- it's in almost exactly the same spot as strat bridge pickups. It's just enough fatter and louder to make it fun. I had a 59n in the bridge for kicks, and the split sound was better than most strats I've played-- not as spanky, but sweet and mellow. In fact, I used that sound more than the whole pickup, which made me feel guilty about having a whole humbucker there.

I intend to in my new project ... I am waiting for all the parts to get here. Artie is sending me some no-load 500k push-pulls just for that purpose. I'm very excited!!!

The push-pull is to switch the coils to run parallel btw. This is going to be a very versatile axe!

Ooops . . . glad you reminded me. :blackeye:

I'll get them out this week for sure.

Re: 59 any good tapped?

I have a pair of Pearly's in my LP that I split sometimes. I'm not too fond of either of them split alone, but they sound great when split and in the middle position.

What I'd like is to hear them both split and the two single coils in series. Bet that would be a killer blues tone...
