59 bassman only 50 watts?

For one thing why would you need a foru speakers for a 50 watt amp section, and how could it have been designed for BASS if it was only 50W?

That said, if it had that warm, full thick bass distorted sound I've been craving, it might not have been that bad an idea.

Re: 59 bassman only 50 watts?

Not even 50 watts. I've owned some real ones that were only about 35 watts. People didn't play loudly in those days. As for why four 10" speakers: the Jensen P10R speakers in those amps only handle about 15 watts or so before blowing. Differant times...

at the time the Bassman went to 45 watts, the most powerful guitar amp Fender made was probably the Twin, which was about 50 watts, but most amps were a lot less

also remember that 50 tube watts is fairly powerful

Oh yeah...I rarely play my '59 Bassman at home. It's to loud!

I play my Deluxe Reverb or tweed Deluxes alot more often.

That's why you've NEVER saw a bass player useing one! (Atleast not in
the last 40 years) :laugh2:

Re: 59 bassman only 50 watts?

I got a 59 Bassman with those 4-10 inch jensen, and it loud enough for most clubs...

AND it's only 40 watts on 110 volts, which is what the electric company used to provide in those days.... Now at 120V it's up around 46~48 watts, with the B+ voltage running hotter.

Re: 59 bassman only 50 watts?

if I remember correctly, Fender used 10" speakers because the larger speakers then tended to break up too much for bass ... a lot of the alnico speakers then were only 15-20 watt speakers.
they probably used 4 speakers to push the same amount of air

I assumed that 10" speakers couldn't have as good of a bass response as 12" speakers ... until I played one :)

Re: 59 bassman only 50 watts?

Ten inch speakers are great for bass. They're more efficient than 15 or 18 inchers and can reproduce a more definitive tone rather than turning to mud. Now, they won't thump you in the chest quite like a 15, but a lot of players (self included) use a combination of 10's and 15's, to get that tonal clarity as well as the low end punch.
