59/C Hybrid made using 59n(SH1N) coil?

Instead of using the 59b coil, if the hybrid contains the coil from the 59n, would the Custom coil be more dominant to the overall sound? Have lesser humcancelling effect?

Anyone tried it? Was it bad? Sounded thinner?

In a nutshell, yes.

In a nutshell, yes; although it does the hum-cancelling effect so it's barely noticeable.

Yes, no and no, not really.

If you've got those coils from broken p'ups, you can make a pretty good-sounding bridge p'up with those "leftovers". Just remember the design calls for the Custom coil should be the slug one.

i've made a lot of hybrids using lots of different combinations of coils. So, yes I've "tried it".

Keep in mind that "bad" is a relative term. What you're asking about may sound HORRIBLY bad to one person, but may be the prefect tone you're looking for.

That in mind...I'd say no it doesn't sound bad. In fact it sounds pretty good, Does it sound thinner? Yes, a little. Thinner and more scooped (less mids). My preference is to use the screw coil from a 59 bridge pup and the slug coil from a Custom and split to the slug coil.

You might even want to try different magnets. The hybrid takes to different magnets like a duck takes to water. For a bright, clean, airy sound I like A5. For a smoother, rounder sound I like A2. For a bigger sound, especially for use in the bridge, I like it with an A8.

In any case, the hybrid (however you choose to put it together) is a great pup.

Good to know its a bit different but not a whole lot. I have a 59n, if I use that one then I'd have to get a new neck pickup & be left with a extra hybrid.
Does the hybrid with 59 slug coil work out for in the neck spot with the other hybrid in the bridge, maybe with a mag swap?

I made a hybrid using stock factory pickups & the results were very good. Thats why I was thinking of making the 59/C, but I feel it would be better to buy it as I'd get to keep the 59n & sh5.

Being on the neck spot, the physics of harmonic reading and current-inducing are not the same than the neck position.

IME, the hybrid made with the Custom screw coil closer to the neck makes it way too fat, lose articulation and produce too much output, so the '59n slug coil doesn't match the other one, mostly because the whole p'up have to be setup pretty far from the strings, exacerbating the inherent coil-mismatch at a level that doesn't sound at all as a neck p'ups should sound, if you ask me.

A 59n/Jazzn hybrid, OTOH... ;)

I've made hybrids with 59 slug and Custom screw coil. There is SOME difference like Discharged said but it is small. I prefer to use it in a Triple Shot ring and I can split to either coil, plus I can use it in parallel which totally gets rid of any excess fatness (for most of my playing, I actually like that fatness in the neck, however).
