59/Custom hybrid in bridge......what to put in neck

I want to change out the pickups in my Gibson Les Paul Standard (390r/398t), they sound too bright to me. I decided on the 59/Custom hybrid for the bridge but I'm not sure about the neck pickup, maybe Pearly Gates or a 59. I play mostly classic rock Kiss, Scorpions, Dokken, Ratt, Tesla. Thank for the help.

The 59 custom in the neck works nicely too. Fat and clear!I am also fond of the pg neck for that flutey tone or the seth for classic tones.

Im curious about the same. Just ordered a Hybrid for my Charvel. The
PG is a great suggestion, especially in a Les paul! How would that sound in a superstrat tho?

The "matching" neck pup for that is the 59/Jazz neck pup, but that's one that SD isn't offering yet. While I have not used the PG at all, there certainly is a lot of love for the PG in the neck around here.

Hey Brian, we both recommended the same pickup on two
different threads!

I've got a pearly Gates neck in my Ibanez, sounds awesome!

A4 '59 neck, put an A8 into that '59/Custom Hybrid of yours and call it a day.

You can thank me later! ;)

Pearly in the neck of a LP is awesome.

The 59/C hybrid is a really great pup. In the bridge of a LP it works wonders with an A8 magnet in it (especially when paired with the Pearly neck).

I've got a Jazz in the neck of my Fret King Esprit that has the 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge...covers all the bases for me, and I've still got to put in the coil split for them both!

#1. most of that list in not classic rock.

#2. get a '59 neck.

The classic rock station on my cable radio plays all those, so they are classic rock now. We're just getting old!

Re: 59/Custom hybrid in bridge......what to put in neck

To my way of thinking, having a hybrid pickup combined with a regular production pickup is a compromise and a waste ... to get the best effect, both pickups need to be hybrids. This is because (IMO) the hybrid's mis-matched coils create a kind of three-dimensional sound which the regular production models don't have. The effect is very noticeable. With both pickups being hybrids, the guitar will be elevated to a higher level, but with only one hybrid, the guitar will be kinda half and half.

And the best neck hybrid is the 59/Jazz. The perfect partner for the Custom/59 and many other bridge hybrids. All my mahogany/humbucker guitars have 59/Jazz neck hybrids in conjunction with either the Custom/59 or JB/Custom bridge pickups.
