59/Custom Hybrid tips and tricks?

I just ordered a 59/Custom for a Gibson SG that'll be my new drop C guitar. Anything I should do to the pickup for further modification before I install it and find something else I should do? I'm an Alnico 8 magnet freak so has anybody tried this or think it'll be a great choice? Any thoughts on anything before I begin installing it would be greatly appreciated

When I put a 59/Custom in my SG, that alone was such an upgrade, I'm not sure what else you would want/need to do to it. I didn't use drop C however, so maybe you'll want to tweak it. But try it as is for a week or so first, identify specifically what about it you want to change, and then folks can make much better suggestions. Would help to know what amp you are using and the sound you are going for also.

Im using the Marshall dsl40c. Moderate to fully saturated gain with guitar volume at 8+. There's a lot of parts in songs I right where I roll the volume back a lot to clean things up for delays and flanger with big chords and melodic riffs which is why I chose the 59/custom. Clean when I need it and heavy when I need it which the stock 498t was just always a little too aggressive. Just a little though. The 498t was also too focused on mids and highs. I needed a smoother sound for my cleaner parts of songs and less sharp stand out sounds

I'd try it stock first. It is a remarkable pickup, as is.

Yes, but it also very gracefully takes mag swaps.

It sounds great with any of the following mags: A2, A3, A4, UOA5 and A8.

Stock is actually my least favorite.

HTH,

HTH,
I remember you saying about it really taking well to mag swaps, do think it gets that character more from the Custom coil or the '59 coil?

I just installed it and I gotta say.. holy hell. The harder you pick, the more custom you get out of it. The softer you pick, the more 59 you get. It is incredible

So Id say it gets that character from the custom. Ive been dealing with customs for a while now and A8 mags seem to be the best fit for any and all. 59 is new to me

That makes sense to me, thank you. I know it's like comparing apples and oranges to more apples and oranges and wonder why there's no bananas.

That's the combination of the two, which, BTW, are the ones they best take mag swaps as pickups: the '59 and the Custom. Nowadays seems like a no-brainer, but in 2004, when forumite Bach2rock made his first hybrids, was kinda black magic from ancient druids!
