59/Custom hybrid.

Re: 59/Custom hybrid.

Ive made a number of hybrids in bridge. Screw coil has more influence over the sound. If i were to give it a percentage it would be 60/40. Has nothing to do with power though. But the screw coil will impart a touch more of its flavor over the sound. You can really fine tune your sound when experimenting with hybrids and mag swaps. Youll start to hear what each coil does to the sound and how each mag will alter the EQ. You can really fine tune what you are after. Thats why hot-rodding pickups is so addicting.. and fun

Re: 59/Custom hybrid.

That would be my assumption too, but I haven't made enough bridge hybrids to know for certain. I can see a slight difference depending on which coil is the screw coil, but I doubt there would be a drastic difference. I wonder if the one the OP's talking about has both coils working; did you test it?

Speakning of neck pickups. I'm thinking of a hybrid between a Seth neck screw and a 59 bridge and a regular A5. How does that sound to you? Are these two pups too similar to really make sense?

Re: 59/Custom hybrid.

The mellow sound of the Seth but with a bit more power, if achievable. I've put my 59/custom in the axe and find my regular Seth maybe a bit too weak to balance with the bridge. However I could back it off a bit, I like the snap and crunch it's got now so I'd probably go for a tad more output from the neck. And if I could make it another project, I'd be happy to :)

Merry Christmas :)

That's a nice pairing of coils. I like to combine neck and bridge coils from the same type of PAF ('59B/'59N), or from different types (SethB/'59N). What I'm after with my neck hybrids is opening up the high-end, getting more treble, and thinning out some of the mids. An A5 will give more output, and more treble; the unbalanced coil aspect also adds treble. It'll be bright, with the resistence difference in coils being more than 10% (around .5K). You may want to use an A4, which has more output than an A2, and that will moderate the treble. Depends how warm the guitar is. In a SethN/'59B hybrid, for myself I'd stick with the A2 or use an UOA5, and it will still be bright and clear. Using an A2 or UOA5 will give it more texture and character than an A5.
