'59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

My guitar is a stingray RS with the stock factory humbuckers. I am playing it into a Fender Deluxe Reverb RI with a Celestion G12-65. The bridge pickup is thin and razor sharp. What I do like about it however is it has a nice edge breakup tone and harmonic content. Contrasting that is the neck pickup which is fat and full, although a bit dull in comparison. It's an extreme difference between the two pickups. I am playing New Country music.

I want the bridge pickup to be fatter, and warmer. I am really tempted to just get a couple 59's and throw them in there as a starting point to figure out what I need. Since these factory pickups aren't any kind of standard.

Or if I can get a recommendation for a good set of pickups for a mahogany body, baked maple neck, with rosewood fretboard, stainless steel frets, and a tremolo (steel), I'll give those a shot.

Well, I wouldn't think the 59 would be 'fatter and warmer'. You might look at the Alnico II Pro instead. It would certainly be about the same power as the 59 but fatter and warmer.

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

So I have two pickups that might work, after digging around.

One of them is a JB trembucker with an A8 magnet swapped in it (at least that's what is written in sharpie on the bottom) and the other is a 59 bridge, but with an UO A5.

Could I use that 59 in the neck, with the JB in the bridge? I know it's wound hotter than the neck should be, but it might balance with the JB.

If I do that and report back, maybe you guys would have a starting place? Since these MM pickups are an unknown quantity. Besides, even though I've never stuffed a 59 bridge in a neck position before, at least I know what a 59 sounds like, and a JB too. I just have no idea what I am fighting with these MM pickups, if it's the guitar or the pickups.

You have them, try it. Bet it's pretty good. Believe Nuno and Dime both ran 59b's in the neck to get a little hotter paffy type tone.

I'd suggest the Slash bridge for a thin bright guitar. Great pickup. Slightly hotter than a standard A2Pro, with nice mids and rich harmonics. Nothing like the JB which IMO is honky & overly aggressive and doesn't clean up well at all.

The Slash would warm up your bridge tone and give it more body. Plus, you could dial your amp brighter which would give your neck tone better clarity. Win-win.

EDIT: You might also try the 59/UA5 in the bridge since you have one on hand. It might surprise you and it's likely to be more to your taste than what's in there.

PS: Is you neck pickup already set pretty low? Lowering it might help.
