59 Neck and Pearly Gates Bridge

Re: 59 Neck and Pearly Gates Bridge

I would say to wait and see. What you ordered are 2 great pickups which have a great chance of sounding awesome in the guitar. Since they are not there yet, and we don't know what it sounds like, it is useless to speculate on replacements yet. If you had done all the research in the world, you still wouldn't know what they would sound like in your guitar, with you playing, which is the same boat a lot of us are in when ordering new pickups we haven't tried before.

Good point. You have to know where you are, before you know what direction you need to go. You just may like what you're getting. If not, there's a variety of options, and you can make a better choice based on how the PGB/'59 sound in your guitar.

Re: 59 Neck and Pearly Gates Bridge

Hi there,
I installed Pearly Gates for bridge and 59 for neck a couple of days ago. I found the bass doesn't match (Pearly low in bass, heavy in high-mid and 59 low in mid and heavy on bass) so I added a 0.047 micro farhad ceramic capacitor in series with the hot connector of the neck pickup (between the pickup and volume pot) based on zenmindbeginner's comment (thank you!) and it sounds less bassy for sure. Although I think that kind of bass was part of the character. I think the bridge Pearly Gates has more character but I don't know character-wise if WLH has more of that high-mid sizzle and vocal throaty mids or I should resort to neck Pearly Gates. I could be settled with 59+cap with some tweaking I guess.
Has anyone tried comparing the neck 59+cap vs. WLH? Thanks again for all your comments.

Re: 59 Neck and Pearly Gates Bridge

Due to the inherent bassy characteristic of the "59n, if paired-up with a PGb, the '59 should've been A3-modded. THEN, they would've matched better, both output and tone-wise.

I ve said it before and I'll say it again: the '59 is a great p'up set, unfortunately, from all alnico mags there are, A5s are the least good-sounding of all, if your ask me. A3/A2, A4/A4, A3/UOA5, UOA5/UOA5 and my personal favorite, A4/A8, are all much better-sounding than the stock A5/A5.

HTH,

Absolutely. Duncan can make a line of PU's from '59's, like they did with Customs. To me, the original SH-5 Custom is the least appealing of the group, and my favorite two aren't in standard production (UOA5 & A8). Both the Custom & '59 platforms work well with a variety of magnets, making them two of Duncan's most versatile PU's. And the two are combined in a production hybrid.

I'd love to see Duncan expand on the '59 and offer it with other magnets. '59N's be can boomy/bassy in some guitars and by offering them with other magnets, that problem goes away. Makes '59's more useable for more players. Likewise some players consider '59B's to be too bright and thin; again, the solution is a magnet away. An UOA5 makes them a richer, warmer PU.

Instead of investing the time and money into developing and testing new winds, Duncan can instantly expand their line uses different magnets with existing PU's. We've done the ground work for them, as Bach-to-Rock did with the '59/Custom hybrid. That allows them to better meet potential customer's needs.

HTH,
So if you had to stick to Pearly Gates on bridge, which magnet swap for 59 neck would be the closest in matching character of bridge Pearly Gates? A3/A2?

Look to post #23 of this very thread.

The answer to this very specific question is already contained on the first sentence, believe it or not. ;)

Re: 59 Neck and Pearly Gates Bridge

If you're still concerned about the lack of bass in your PG bridge (which is by nature pretty bright), you might also consider Lt Kojak's favorite combo of an A8 in the bridge with an A4 in the neck. I bet the Pearly Gates would really kick ass with an A8.

Re: 59 Neck and Pearly Gates Bridge

Well, let's not jump to conclusions.
I understand your ideological banter, but we're talking about an A3 '59n, not about middle-aged men wearing hi-heeled boots, make-up and spandex pants!

Get some context, people! ;)

So I should remove the 0.047 cap once I resort to A3. Right?
