'59b in neck position

Was wondering if a '59b (bridge model) would work ok in the neck position of say a Les Paul. Specs listed are not the same but close. It would compliment a hot bridge humbucker.

Has anyone tried this and, if so, got satisfactory results?

Re: '59b in neck position

I've never tried that, but I love the way a Jazz Bridge Model sounds in the neck position of a Les Paul.

Re: '59b in neck position

If you use the neck for soloing a lot, it works great. It'll work for clean rhythm too, but it's possible that it'll be a little bit boomy for that unless you lower it down. I'm sure it'll work out for you, if you're using high output bridge pickups. Just try it out, and let us know the results.

Jolly gave me the idea of a Jazz Bridge in neck position, and it's my favorite neck pickup now.

I think it would be a good recipe for hollow mud.[/QUOTE

Getting some mixed messages here. I sure don't want hollow mud though. The specs between the neck and bridge models seem not so different but I don't want to make a mistake either. Help me Mr. Bill! :omg:

It is going to be boomy - probably muddy on the low notes.

A jazz bridge would be much nicer in a Les Paul neck position.

Re: '59b in neck position

It'll work. In fact, the 59B is wound exactly like a vintage paf...it's the neck version (the 59N) that is differant: it's underwound compared to a vintage paf.

That said, I've always thought 8.2K (the DC resistance of a 59B) was a little to strong for a neck pickup, even in vintage pafs. So I actually prefer the underwound 59N or Seth Lover neck or Pearly Gates neck to the real 50's pafs I've owned when used as neck pickups. Lew

Alright Lew, with that being said, the bottom line question is - Whould the '59b be a better pickup in the neck of an Epi Les Paul Studio than the stock pickup that comes with the guitar?

Probably...but a 59N would be clearer and, IMO, be a better choice. The 59N would be plenty ballsy but not as woofy and it would be less likely to sound muddy at higher volumes. Lew

It's time for a "Splatbucker" -- not exactly a split, not exactly a tap, but a splat. When you throw the switch to what would normally be the split on an 8k pickup, instead of a puny 4k coil, you get that coil plus some of the other coil, like say 2k worth for a total of 6k.

Re: '59b in neck position

Most aftermarket pups in the PAF range will be better than what you have. I think Duncan is on the right track, keeping lots of their neck pups under 8k. The 59B will be fine, not too woofy. If you have a hot bridge humbucker like you said, then it could be just fine. If you're asking because you have the 59B already, then yes, go ahead and use it. But if you're buying new, then the Jazzb, or the 59n, PGn, & Seth Lew mentioned would probably ALL be better choices, no matter how hot your bridge pickup is.

And "Splatbucker" is an awesome name BTW. Now I want to use it for my next P-90/humbucker build.

Don't have it yet. A guy wants to trade his 59b for my Duncan Distortion. I think I'm going to pass on that and get either a 59n or a Jazz. Have an Dmz Evo in the bridge position now but am leaning towards a Duncan model for the neck. Want something very clean and clear for the neck.

Re: '59b in neck position

I put a 59B in the neck (accidentally) once. It was a while ago so I can't give a sonic evaluation. But it sounded "off" enough that I thought there was a problem, investigated, and realized my error. :smack:

So I guess that means I didn't dig it.
