5E3 research is getting too much . . . help needed.

Re: 5E3 research is getting too much . . . help needed.

Looks like the main thing is higher headroom/more power...20 watts vs a stock 5E3's 12 (on a good day!).

The big thing about hot rodded 5E3 amps is the feel...many of them sond pretty good but don't have the same player interaction of a stock 5E3...

Gotcha !

5E3's are 12'ish watts ?
I thought they are closer to 15 ?

Oh well, matters not, as headroom is one thing i do not want in this amp. (believe it or not)
I want to amp to be played only at max vol for that sweet driven-to-the point-of-explosion edge.

I'd say a strong one, running strong tubes on a good day is gettin 12 or so...not like 15 is much if any different...remember, you can not hear a watt.

The big deal is headroom...the lower the power the faster iot starts to crunch but a 12 watt and a 15 watt amp shouldn't start breaking up any sooner than the other...I mean, it's 3 watts!

Re: 5E3 research is getting too much . . . help needed.

my Mission 5E3 is my main amp these days ... since I switched the speaker out for a Weber, it sounds better than my '56 Deluxe

personally, that clip is just OK, not great. Besides the distortion of the recording, which is no big deal to me, the clip is too short to show any dynamic range. As good as 5E3s sound when pushed, they do have a range of tones in the right hands.

again, I'll link Greg V's clip. Even though he's using a tweaked 5E3 circuit -- a Tungsten Crema Wheat -- it's still one of the best examples of what this type amp can do:

I like the way Greg demo'ed the amp.
Even at 20Watts it sounded 5E3-like.

But, looking at the Tungsten site, it sounds like the "regular" 5E3 will be even better to my ears :

" The Tungsten 25 Watt Cortez is the big bro' to the standard Cortez. This is not just a larger Cortez, but is smoother and more refined.
At higher volume, the 25 Watt Cortez will break up with a smooth and creamy distortion
. "

And a smooth creamy dist. is something i do NOT want.
I want nasty gritty fuzz like dirt.

Even Greg said in the clip that the bigger 20W model have a slightly tighter bass response, meaning the lower wattage one will have a slightly looser low end, and THAT is what i want ;)

One question though !

From the Tungsten site :

" The amp excels at blues and distorted classic rock tones with raw punchy tone that is very expressive. Roll back the guitar volume, and you achieve clean but edgy tones, and at full tilt, it is the epitome of the “Zuma” sound. "

What is the "Zuma" sound ?

Thanks for the vids, drpietrzak.

Been to the site, but is it "under construction" right now :(

Re: 5E3 research is getting too much . . . help needed.

after this discussion i played my 5e3 with a hot strat and a 25' cable last night for two sets. it sounded great and has at least as much gain as in that clip.

get a mission 5e3

Re: 5E3 research is getting too much . . . help needed.

Any of the well done 5e3's will have that type of gain. The speaker tends to shape the tone after that part. When I was using a 5e3 head it was amazing how differently a speaker would shape the tone of these things (smooth to gritty).

It is just a matter of which of the great options you pick up. You really can't go wrong.

Mission has the best parts on any 5E3 kit out there.

Build it stock and listen to what it's supposed to sound like and then feel free to mod it. Lots of messed up kits out there where the new kit builder just went off on a tangent.

HUH ! . . . "atleast that much" ? :32:

Thank you Jeremy

MMmmm, speakers you say !
Good to know.

I am still at a loss when it comes to thr massive choice that Weber has to offer. I have NO idea where to even start my search.

I read the comments and questions posted with that clips of mine.
Some folks asked the OP, what he did to get that type of hard edge GRIT, and he said, (except for the Emi driver) it is a stock 5E3 clone kit, and all he did diff was the output tranny was not a stock 5E3 one, but one made for a Deluxe Reverb.

I assume a slightly bigger output tranny would make the tone smoohter ?
Like in all the other higher output modded 5E3's, not so ?

Re: 5E3 research is getting too much . . . help needed.

I do not know about the modded one's really. Others will have to help there. All 3 of mine have been relatively stock. I would assume it is really that it will have more headroom and a tighter bass.

The speaker in the one with the tone you like would be the starting point. Weber makes a lot of variations, and the Blues is a popular option as well as other British voiced speakers. These seems to really appreciate lower tunings as well.

Mission owners . . . according to your ear/experience, where will the volume knob be if you listen to the amount of crunch he gets ?

5 ? 6 ? 7 ? 8 ? maxed ?

Thanx
;)

Brother, you are really over thinking this and then some...

It's this simple...there are a million shades of crunch on the volume knob od a tweed Deluxe but they will all almost always be a little different from one to the other no matter how tight things are built.

I get the feeing that you've never plugged into a tweed deluxe yourself so the only real thing you can do is find one and try it or buy one and saee if it works for you.

It might and it might not but there is no way for you to know until you plug into one and see what it does.
