Hello everybody! I've got a P-Rails in neck, middle singlecoil and bridge humbucker. I want to add a button to change the middle position. How do I wire a switch to get the following

Button pos 1

1 - Bridge Humb
2 - Bridge + middle
3 - Middle
4 - Middle + Neck
5 - Neck P-Rail

Button pos 2

1 - Bridge Humb
2 - Bridge + middle
3 - Bridge + Neck
4 - Middle + Neck
5 - Neck P-Rail

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

Neck is just whatever is selected at on-off-on switch for P-Rails.
No, I'd don't like the "Strat pu switch" mod, just want what I want)))

Hello everybody! I've got a P-Rails in neck, middle singlecoil and bridge humbucker. I want to add a button to change the middle position. How do I wire a switch to get the following

Button pos 1

1 - Bridge Humb
2 - Bridge south single coil + middle single coil
3 - Middle SC
4 - Middle sc + Neck
5 - Neck P-Rail

Button pos 2

1 - Bridge Humb
2 - Bridge south single coil + middle single coil
3 - Bridge + Neck
4 - Middle sc + Neck
5 - Neck P-Rail

the part where you want a "switch for everything else but"
that would be a bit tough if you want positions 2 & 4 to stay the same

I would suggest the bridge or neck "always on" mod instead
and with the super switch ( or the standard switch, I think )
you could get the

Button pos 1

1 - Bridge Humb
2 - Bridge south single coil + middle single coil
3 - Middle SC
4 - Middle sc + Neck
5 - Neck P-Rail

Button pos 2

1 - Bridge Humb
2 - Bridge south single coil + middle single coil
3 - Bridge Humb + middle single coil
4 - Bridge Humb + Middle sc + Neck
5 - Bridge Humb + Neck P-Rail

but this may be what Funkfingers suggested

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

Yes, it is. The problem is that I don't like the sound of Bridge Humb + Middle sc + Neck, and I want to stay sure, that if I push the button, I'd still have playable sounds and I don't have to worry about pos 4

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

come to think of it
on my buddy's H-S-S strat

I put a 3 position on-off-on and he had

just as above but a bridge always on and split

so his was

Switch in Middle Position

1 - Bridge Full
2 - Bridge Full + middle single coil
3 - Middle SC
4 - Middle sc + Neck sc
5 - Neck sc

Switch in Down Position (Bridge Full always on)

1 - Bridge Full
2 - Bridge Full + middle single coil
3 - Bridge Full + middle single coil
4 - Bridge Full + Middle sc + Neck sc
5 - Bridge Full + Neck sc

Switch in Up Position (Bridge Split always on)

1 - Bridge Split
2 - Bridge Split + middle single coil
3 - Bridge Split + middle single coil
4 - Bridge Split + Middle sc + Neck
5 - Bridge Split + Neck sc

he just doesn't use the combinations he doesn't like

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

I've tried not to use them, but in fact it gets me nervous, so I gonna wait for a solution or give my guitar to a tech (((

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

Clarify pos. 4 and 5. Are you ever splitting the P-Rails?

And when you say button... is this a specific switch you have in mind? SPDT? DPDT?

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

Pending clarification of the P-Rails operation in pos 4 & 5, I've got something that works using a DPDT on/on switch, splitting to the slug coil...

When you say "south" coil are you referring to Duncan pickups? If both the bridge humbucker and middle single coil are both Duncan, you would want to split to the north coil to retain hum cancelling unless you purchased the single coil as RW/RP. I believe that if you were to use the rail coil of the P-Rails in pos. 4 then the middle would have to be RW/RP to retain hum cancelling in pos.4.

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

I do change the sound of P-Rails with 3 way on-off-on, but it will not affect the wiring of the 5way switch. Just a standard "neck" place to wire an output from a 3way.

I'm using now south coil of TB-11 with non-RW/PR Fender singlecoil. It humcancels in pos 2 nicely.

The button (that changes middle pos) will be just an ordinary on-on button, I guess. It more useful than a toggle switch for this case I think

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

Not too bad, if you can follow my nomenclature. This uses a SPDT on/on switch, the most common push-button layout. There's a better way to split the bridge humbucker, but it would require a DPDT switch. Anyway, superswitch has 4 poles, numbered accordingly, and the the .X refers to the lug. Don't have time to draw this up right now, so hopefully you can follow this:

P1.C - jumper to P2.C, output to on/on switch
P1.1 - bridge black, jumper to P3.1
P1.2 - bridge red & white, jumper to P3.2
P1.3 - middle hot, jumpers to P2.2 and P2.4
P1.4 - jumper to P1.5
P1.5 - P-Rails hot (from toggle), jumper from P1.5, jumper to P3.5
P2.C - jumper from P1.C
P2.1 - open
P2.2 - jumper from P1.3
P2.3 - open
P2.4 - jumper from P1.3
P2.5 - open

P3.1 - jumper from P1.1
P3.2 - jumper from P1.2, jumper to P3.3
P3.3 - jumper from P3.2
P3.4 - jumper to P3.4, jumper to P4.3
P3.5 - jumper from P1.5
P3.C - jumper to P4.C, output to on/on switch
P4.1 - open
P4.2 - open
P4.3 - jumper from P3.4
P4.4 - open
P4.5 - open
P4.C - jumper from P3.C

The on-on switch, middle lug to output (volume pot). One outside lug is from P1.C, the other from P3.C.

The way I've wired the bridge pickup makes it susceptible to RF interference in areas with high RF traffic, common mostly in poorly shielded guitars. If it's an issue for you, a DPDT on-on will be required.

Hope that helps.

Re: 5way super switch wiring question

I changed 1 post to ease the wiring. But I guess it's no necessary now)

Thank you, MikeS! I try it as soon as I get my switch from e-bay!
