6 Screw Z-Mod - anybody tried it?

Seems backwards to use the neck side screws (poles) for the wound strings and bridge side screws for the plain strings.

Basically any Dimarzio PU with 12 Hex screws can be turned to something like that.
I just wonder if hotter pickups are beneficial for such a mod?

threaded rod magnets. the originals were cunife, the duncans (and most other modern reproductions) use alnico 5. but again, the fender wide range pups had 12 pole pieces like a double screw coil humbucker. but only three per string were accessible through the cover. the others were installed upside down basically.

this is different in that you are only having one pole per string so i bet it sounds much more single coil like in some respects than a wrh

The Wide Range Roswell pickup I had in a baritone Tele Deluxe was muddy as hell. 4,45H, 8k A5. Not sure if it was the original construction but I hated it.

Does someone have a PAF Pro or something similar to try how removing 6 pole pieces sounds compared to a stock humbucker?

Roswell pickups are cheap products made in Asia so I would be surprised to find CuNiFe screw poles in them.

But for the record, Fender have reissued the Wide Range with CuNiFe poles. I have one of these in my Jazzmaster shaped Telecaster and it sounds gorgeous to my ears. I've even modified it to allow single coil operation and the result is extremely satisfying to me.

Regarding HB's with twice 3 poles: as expected, they sound between regular HB's and single coils. Pulling off half of their poles lowers their inductance, making them brighter with a lower output. But if original slugs or screws are kept in the bobbins and these bobbins left over a bar magnet, the Q factor will remain lower than with a single coil... To compensate this effect, It would be necessary to pull off magnet and magnetic poles then to fit rod mags in the coils. It wouldn't be quite like a single coil because of the overall DCR but it would be the closest possible.

I've a bunch of experimental results about such things somewhere in my archives. More later, if it has any interest and if time permits...

OK, below is a test involving a powerful HB, 14.45k.

With 12 slugs & a ceramic bar, its inductance is 7.2H. Its resonant peak tnrough pots + guitar cable is pictured by the light green line.

With 6 slugs & the same ceramic bar, its inductance drops to 5.35H. The related Rz is shown in light blue.

With 6 AlNiCo rod mags, it measures 3.9H. Its resonance in this case is shown by the pink line.

For comparison, the white line is the Rz of a MIJ Fender single coil (2.25H, 6.6k).

Tonally, these pickups would react accordingly: with less output level and more high frequencies as their inductance diminishes and their Rz rises...

FWIW. :-)

Yeah I know the Roswell stuff isn't high end but I needed the bigger sized pickup to fit the pickguard and the Wide Range description looked promising..
Thank you very much for the comparison, that gives a lot of insights! :)
