6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

on my 6 String (modded Warlock NJ) I installed a Dimebucker in bridge position and I really love its sound. heavy but tight lowend, very agressive but also very clear....
now I want to get as close to that sound as possible with my 7-String (Ibanez RG7620). so can anyone recommend me a 7-string-PU thats very close to the Dimebucker?

before anyone suggests it: I dont really want a Dimarzio X2N 7string (soon to be released afaik). I have a X2N in my second 6-string and dont like it as much

I have a simmilar thread running at www.sevenstring.org but noone was really able to help me so far. figured you guys would maybe have more info on PUs.

someone mentioned the Bare Knuckle MiracleMan and another idea was to ask Duncan for the price of a custom Dimebucker 7string

any ideas?

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

hmm...I dunno if it would be possible to get a custom shop 7 string dimebucker...its a pretty non-standard style bucker. I'd say the duncan custom is the closest you'd come with a production pickup.

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

hmmmm, just from looking at the discriptions and the tone-chart, it seems the Dimbucker and the Custom are pretty similar indeed.... may be worth a try

any other good ideas?

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

does anyone have any other/more recomendations for me?

I even emailed Duncan about a customshop Dimebucker7 a few days ago, but didnt get an answer so far. I'd rather find a nice production PU that does the job (less money, less hassle, less waiting-time)

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

the SH-8 is supposed to pretty much be a gain-monster, right?
I have doubts if it would be right for me.... I have a Dimarzio X2N (also a lot of gain) and dont like it that much.... too much gain, not as tight and heavy as the Dimebucker
also I play through an ENGL Powerball, so I have more than enough gain from the amp, I dont need to drive it hard with my PUs

hey guys. well im not sure if its possible or how into the idea your gonna be. but i have a bill lawrence l-500 lead (also a blade style humbucker) personally i love it. asking them to wind a custom 7 string version of that might be worth a look into as well. becky@billlawrence.com that would be bill's most excellent wife becky. she will be able to answer any questions if your interested if you just wanna snoop the site its http://www.billlawrence.com/ good luck man.

You may want to try the DUncan Custom as a seven string version... this is what it sounds like in an RG1077XL : http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=126926&songID=2303807

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

Zerberus: gotta check out that clip when I'm at home again (I'm at work at the moment)! I think I will check out the Custom SH7-5 before I do any custom-orders. from the descriptions it looks like this is closest to the dimebucker as far as production-PUs go. at least I didnt find anything else so far.

Duncan Customshop hasnt answered my email so far.... maybe I'll also try and ask Bill Lawrence about a 7-string L500XL or something. after all, the dimebucker is a kind of "Lawrence-spinoff", right?

about those lawrence-PUs: what would you recommend for bridge-position (mainly heavy rythm, but also screaming leads ;) )? L500L? XL? what would be comparable to the Dimebucker for example?

They look the same but, are not even in the same balpark! Do a search to find out the details. Yes, the XL500 would be your best bet!

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

ah, ok.
I read through some of the old posts. still the descriptions of the 500XL sound very promising.

I think I'll just order a SH7-5 (7-string-version of the duncan custom) and see how that works. if its not my thing, I can still think about ordering custom-shop PUs. if it is, well then there's no problem :)

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

I recommend buying from forum members Lewguitar, Martinsixstringcustoms or Blackrose Customs ( UID: Wymoreguitars).... I´ve never been quoted a lead time of under 3 months from a German dealer (online OR local) and I´ waited only about 6 weeks to get mine from Lew because it had to be made first ;)

50% cut in lead time, a lower final price even after customs and shipping, and Lew honors the 21-day whereas I can´t find a German dealer that will?

I´d love to support the local distribution channels, but that´s 3 big strikes for buying it anywhere else... IIRC in baseball that means "next batter", and Lew´s batting average is phenomenal :D

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

hmmm the thomann guys say it'll take 2-4 weeks, costs 81€, seems cool I thought.....

Sounds cool... But especially at Thomann I´d ask twice and make sure it´s really the SEVEN string version, because 81€ is their price for the 6 string version and the seven string version is more expensive just about everywhere (not by much, but..).... They are also notorious for listing EVERYTHING they´ve ever stocked or sold as an Item they can acquire, but the Custom Seven isn´t in there, meaning they´ve probably never sold one....

According to S.M. of Warwick (though this info is a bit older, about 8 months...) the seven string Humbuckers are not usually stocked at the Distributor´s Depot but ordered when needed, meaning if Thomann thinks they can just order one and have it in a week and send it out they´re screwing themselves and their customer over... as usual... ;)

If THomann can get you one in 2-4 weeks great... BUt something tells me that they can´t and just didn´t check as thoroughly as they should have....But again, maybe 2 or 3 things have finally changed and it´s really possible... :eek13:

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

this was what they answered to my email:

Hallo,

SEYMOURDUNCAN SH7-5 BLK Duncan Custom Humbucker, für 81.00 EUR
158.42 DM

bestellen kann man aber jetzt schon.
Lieferzeit ca. 2-4 Wochen

seems they didnt have them in stock and just get them now...

Re: 6-string -> Dimebucker, 7-string -> ???

here is what the guys from duncan custom-shop answered me:

Ballpark price on a 7 string Dimebucker would be $400; there is a lot of custom fabrication involved. We would try to build the pickup on a standard 7 string bottom plate rather than the Dimbucker style "bucket surround". Fabricating a 7 string Dimebucker surround would add to the cost. The pickup would still have the blade style poles. Lead times are currently running 6 to 8 weeks.

I would not ship free to Germany

means no custom Dimebucker7 for me, I dont want to spend that much money for one PU
