The Dime is made like the old Bill Lawrence pickups; they have a surround, so if the bobbins are smaller, I would expect that is just so the surround fits and the whole package is a standard humbucker size.
I cant see this being possible. They're two completely different sounding pickups. I've swapped mags and got different tones, but nothing that drastic.

It's public knowledge that the Jazz and the Alnico 2 Pro are the same coil wind. The Jazz uses an A5 magnet, the Alnico 2 Pro uses an A2 magnet. Different magnets will make the same coil have different sounding characteristics as a result. Same reason the Custom, the Custom Custom and the Custom 5 exist.
I agree. All of a sudden a cold and surgical pickup like the Jazz becomes something warm and chewy, which might be almost polar oppoosites on a first glance. However, even if you swap the magnet, and they do take on different characteristics, I still feel and detect the ultra cleanliness and clarity from the Jazz in the APH-1.
The analog for me would be the Distortion and the JB, which I'm more familiar with. People here argue they're different winds. But even if I'm super familiar and love the JB and Distortion, I feel they are very much alike even with their stock magnets. I wouldn't say it's the same pickup, but I wouldn't be surprised if I knew nothing about them other than how they sound, and someone told me they're related design-wise. I feel it's very close to the same with the Jazz/APH-1 (for me).
